WHAT TO DO THIS WEEKEND 24.01.20

/

This week might have begun with Blue Monday, but you can still finish it on a high. Burns Night and Chinese New Year celebrations are taking place across the capital. Or, if you want to get your groove on, Soho’s finest jazz club is taking over Twickenham Stadium. Here are the best things to do in London this weekend…

ENJOY BURNS NIGHT SUPPER: 34 Mayfair

Elegant restaurant 34 Mayfair celebrates Scottish poet Robbie Burns with a special menu from head chef John Edwards. Look out for loin of Glencoe venison with Scotch broth and neeps; Isle of Mull scallops with a haggis crust; and, of course, a deep-fried Mars bar – elevated with a raspberry and whisky cranachan coupe.

CELEBRATE CHINESE NEW YEAR: Hutong

On level 33 of the Shard, Hutong is laying on a northern Chinese menu, with some rare entertainment. Look out for an illuminated lion parading through the restaurant, as well as a red pocket on each table containing a surprise for one table of diners, whose meal for the evening will be comped.

CATCH SOME FINE ART: Royal Academy

Perhaps the 20th-century’s most celebrated portraitist, Lucian Freud also portrayed himself with great regularity. Spanning nearly seven decades from 1939, his self-portraits give a fascinating insight into both his psyche and his development as a painter. Seen together, they are an engrossing study of the process of ageing. Confronting his self-image anew with each work, he depicted himself in youth as the Greek hero Acteon, then – fittingly, for a great painter of nudes – naked but for a pair of unlaced boots at age 71. This weekend is your last chance to these works in all their glory.

HEAR THE SOUNDS OF CUBA: Twickenham Stadium

On Saturday, Twickenham hosts an evening laid on by world-famous Soho jazz bar Ronnie Scott’s. After an optional pre-show dinner in The Gate restaurant, guests can settle in for live Cuban music from improv specialist Yelfris Valdes – who has shared stages with Madonna, The Clash and Michael Kiwanuka – and pianist Elaine Correa. Late-night entertainment comes from London Latin scene veteran DJ Richie Rich.
