PODCAST: WeCrashed

The founders of WeWork believed they were on the brink of making business history. Thanks to the vision – and hubris – of CEO Adam Neumann, it was valued at $47bn and going through a huge IPO in which Neumann sold the dream to some of the world’s savviest investors. But did his dream match reality? David Brown of the Business Wars podcast hosts this six-part series which explores that question and the wider phenomenon of ‘unicorns’. Catch up now as the final episode is released this month.

TECH: Audio-Technica ATH-AWAS Headphones

Audio-Technica’s ATH-AWAS headphones are released this month with a hefty £1,299.99 price tag. What makes them worth that kind of money? They’re hand assembled in Tokyo from Japanese asada zakura wood, which is as hard-wearing as it is rare. Powerful 53mm drivers have a diamond-like coating to reduce distortion and optimise high-frequency sounds. Magnesium alloy arms ensure the best possible fit, with an excellent ear-cup seal enhanced by smooth, leather pads and headband. The overall result is a fine example of true Japanese craftsmanship.

BOOK: David Hockney, My Window

In artistic terms, 2020 is the year of David Hockney. As well as a dedicated exhibition of his drawings at the National Portrait Gallery, specialist publisher Taschen has released a new batch of collector’s editions of My Window. This vast coffee-table tome (£1,750) showcases 120 of the artist’s iPhone and iPad drawings, which track the seasonal changes he observes through the windows of his Yorkshire home. Epic pink sunsets and snowy countryside landscapes are etched in vivid tones. Each of the 1,000 copies is numbered and signed by the man himself.
