My Style Rules: Chido Obasi

My style is a seamless mix of urban wear and practical chic. I love fuss-free items that are oversized, liberating and easy to chuck on both day and night. The best style advice I’ve ever received is to wear whatever makes you feel comfortable in your own skin, and don’t be afraid to dare in the process.

Comfort, ease and neutrality are my top three rules for good style. Plus, of course, a good dose of confidence.

I love colours but neutrals are never wrong and, if paired correctly, work for anything.

I really couldn’t live without sunglasses, a great black knit, a neutral-toned tee and my Bottega Veneta belt. A Bottega coat is high on my wish list for spring – its timelessness and luxurious appeal is undeniable.  A Prada coat is high up the list too.

Beats headphones are my most recent investment – great when editing and for peace in noisy environments. I would never spend a lot of money on socks.

My favourite piece in my wardrobe would have to be a grey, hard woollen Bottega Veneta coat I got a few years ago. It makes me feel like a real boss. What would I never wear? A pinstripe. I’m not very tall so I’d risk looking squashed.

When it comes to pulling off a suit, the traditional code says you pair it with a shirt. But the current trend – as seen at Versace, Berluti - and way to style it is with a bright turtleneck.
 
If I were to talk you through my footwear collection we’d be here for a while. From Nike to Puma, I own over 50 pairs of trainers. Practicality is key for me and trainers, if styled the right way, can be the go-to item day and night.
 
My thoughts on men’s jewellery? I love a gold accessory.
 
A head-to-toe black YSL suit I bought four years ago in Milan is possibly my biggest investment. There’s also that Bottega Veneta coat, and my Tod’s loafers, they have lasted me a lifetime.
 
My shopping philosophy is buy less, shop responsibly and don’t overthink it.

There are so many cool, under-the-radar brands worth knowing about right now. Contemporary South African label Thebe Magugu, emerging menswear designer Marvin Desroc, London activewear designer Saul Nash and Italy’s Christian Boaro are currently my favourites. They all mix practicality and elegance with ease.
 
My style icon is Frank Ocean. He doesn’t give a damn about trends, and his don’t-look-at-me aura is incredible. He could wear a tee today, pyjamas tomorrow and he’d still look cool.
 
London is easily the most stylish city in the world. Look at Shoreditch: its eclectic mix of cultures, styles and people make it a phenomenal style destination.
 
I’ve had far too many amazing fashion moments to condense, but attending my very first Valentino show two years ago was a  highlight. I remember watching one when I was five, dreaming of being part of this industry. It felt like a dream come true.
