# A Foodie Guide To Cornwall

Katie and Rick Toogood’s Islington institution Prawn On The Lawn celebrates Cornwall’s best producers. They also now have seaside sister sites in Padstow – so who better to share their foodie finds and favourite places in the county? From hotels and top seafood restaurants to summer-ready pubs and the best fish and chips, these are the names and places to know for your next trip.

## EAT & DRINK

## *To eat…*

[**Fee’s Food**](https://www.feesfood.co.uk/) in Rock is our favourite place for coffee and cake. The sausage rolls are to die for. The owner, Fee, did our wedding catering back in the day. [**Four Boys**](https://www.fourboyscafe.co.uk/) is the sister place to Fee’s Food and is run by her son George. It’s a great spot for lunch, as it overlooks the estuary in Rock. Must-eats include the hake burger with XO sauce, and our kids love the marinated anchovies.

[**Appleton’s**](https://appletonsrestaurant.com/) in Fowey is one of our favourite restaurants in Cornwall. Andy and Lyndsey always welcome you with open arms and comforting home-cooked Italian food. The truffle ravioli is an absolute must-order. They also have a negroni menu, which is irresistible.

[**Nathan Outlaw’s New Road and Fish Kitchen**](https://outlaws.co.uk/restaurants/fish-kitchen/) in Port Isaac is our go-to place for a special occasion. It offers fresh fish and great wine – and the food and service is always bang on.

[**Coombeshead Farm**](https://coombesheadfarm.co.uk/) is a restaurant, guesthouse and bakery. It’s honestly epic. It’s set on a working farm, in 66 acres of meadows and woodland, where we’ve enjoyed candlelit suppers, Sunday lunches and staff parties. It’s amazing every time we visit. Oh, and they’ve got a green Michelin star.

## *To drink…*

[**BinTwo**](https://bintwo.com/) is our favourite place in Padstow for a glass of wine. You can choose a drink from the menu or pick a bottle off the shelf and pay corkage. Ordering a packet of truffle crisps to soak it all up is mandatory.

[**Trevibban Mill Vineyard**](https://trevibbanmill.com/) shares a home with our restaurant Barnaby’s, and we feel so lucky. Run by Liz, Engin and their son Tom, it produces award-winning wines and ciders that are all delicious. We highly recommend popping in for a tour and a tasting. They also have lodges on site that you can stay in for the night.

[**Padstow Brewing Co.**](https://www.padstowbrewing.co.uk/)**’s** tasting rooms are right opposite Prawn On The Lawn and it’s a great place to try all the beers made at their tiny brewery at the top of the town. We recently made a lager, You Okay Hun, and an IPA, Yeah You*,* with these guys, which we sell in all our restaurants.

[**St Kew Inn**](https://www.stkewinn.co.uk/) is great and we feel super lucky to call this gem of a pub our local. Just 132 steps from our house (yes, we have counted!) it provides an amazing choice of local beers, and the Sunday roasts by the cosy fire are to die for. In the summer, nab a table in the beer garden and get stuck into the rosé.

[**The Golden Lion**](https://www.goldenlionpadstow.com/) is an amazing family owned freehouse right in the centre of Padstow. It’s properly cosy, and they use locally sourced meat and veg for their roasts – it’s well worth the trip. It’s super popular with tourists and locals, so book ahead as they are always full on Sundays.

## *For takeaways/to go…*

[**Rock Fish and Chips**](https://www.rockfishchips.co.uk/) is a new take on a chippy, right in the village of Rock. It does the classics – haddock, cod, scampi – but also local scallops, prawns and mackerel grilled in house. The curry sauce is insanely good. All the seafood is sourced from Cornwall by George Cleave (who we also use at POTL and Barnaby’s).

[**The Hidden Hut**](https://hiddenhut.co.uk/) is an old National Trust café right on the beach. It’s been transformed into the most special place by Simon Stallard. We love taking the kids for a play on the beach followed by hot chocolate or a seafood chowder with homemade potato rolls. Don’t miss the feast nights, which are harder to get tickets for than Glastonbury. Down the road, its sister site, The Standard Inn, is also one of our faves for Sunday lunch.

[**Bango Kitchen**](https://shellfishpig.co.uk/visit-us/) in Penryn is excellent. The mushroom ramen with a fudgy soy egg is worth the travel time wherever you are in Cornwall. While [**Fat Pepper**](https://www.fatpepper.co.uk/) in Wadebridge is perfect for dan dan noodles and epic miso cookies.

[**The Butchers Bakehouse**](https://www.thebutchersbakehouse.co.uk/) is a little bakery which started life on St Columb. The team has got a few dotted around Cornwall now. The Wadebridge branch is our local – our kids go mad for the cruffins and mega cheese straws.

## SLEEP

[**Watergate Bay Hotel**](https://www.watergatebay.co.uk/) is dog and kid friendly (great, as we’ve got multiples of both) and the view is to die for. We sometimes treat ourselves to a night away here if we just need a bit of time out, but you can also pop into the all-day dining restaurant Living Space for lunch after a (often blustery) walk on the beach below.

[**Hotel Tresanton**](https://thepolizzicollection.com/hotel-tresanton/) in St Mawes is pure magic. The location is stunning, and the service and food is always first-class. We came here for one night for our honeymoon and have made it a tradition to return each year on our anniversary. An early morning sea swim is a must – as are oysters and fizz at the beach club. In the same village, [**The Watch House**](https://www.watchhousestmawes.co.uk/) does the most incredible fish and chips.

## SHOP

## *For clothes…*

[**&KIN**](https://andkin.co.uk/) in Nansledden near Newquay stocks some great independent, sustainable brands. It’s run by the lovely Lottie, who brings a slice of the Californian coast to Cornwall.

[**Jam Industries**](https://jam-industries.co.uk/collections/all?gclid=Cj0KCQjw-r-vBhC-ARIsAGgUO2C_PyJt1C1gyrHP8-dSyWmjBx9US6b6BU03kF0niNhYxXUyicCTvl4aApmkEALw_wcB) in Padstow is our go-to – the Guernsey jumpers are the best. Andy and Mark (who own and run it with their mum) are good friends of ours, and it’s so great to see another independent business thriving in Cornwall. We recently did a shirt collaboration with them and have another planned for later this year.

## *For provisions…*

[**St Kew Farmshop**](https://www.stkewfarmshop.co.uk/) stocks some amazing local produce and is, in our opinion, the best place for brunch. They also do a great Friday-night takeaway that changes every week.

[**Padstow Farm Shop**](https://www.padstowfarmshop.co.uk/) has an incredible butcher's counter, with most of the meat from their on-site farm. We always order our Christmas turkey from here. There’s also an amazing selection of vegetables and a great cheese counter. Look no further for a Cornish pasty to go – these guys are the best.

## VISIT

[**Saunas By The Sea**](https://saunasbythesea.co.uk/) in New Polzeath is a Cornish must-visit. The wood-fired saunas are right on the beach. On a day off, we love nothing more than a sea swim and a good sauna, followed by a beer and a pizza at nearby [**Atlantic Kitchen**](https://atlanticbarandkitchen.com/). You can rent a space in the sauna or they do private hire.

[**Camel Ski School**](https://www.camelskischool.com/) is great if you want to try some watersports. On the north coast, Camel Ski offers a bit of everything – waterskiing, wakeboarding, paddle boarding, banana boats. The team also has a private island in the middle of the estuary, which we rented once for a staff party.
