To remove the risk of grown men being reduced to schoolboys by their bare legs, we sought the advice of Nick Howard-Lanes and Thomas M. Nick Howard-Lanes: I look for a relaxed fit, a quality fabric and a clean silhouette. Shorts should feel effortless, sit comfortably on the waist, and work just as well with a T-shirt as they do with a shirt. Thomas M. Lloyd: For me, it's all about the shape. I tend to go for shorts that sit above the knee with a bit of room in the leg. Most of my style inspiration comes from the '80s and '90s, so I like balancing a shorter short with something oversized on top, whether that's a shirt, sweatshirt or knit. ## What length do you recommend? Nick: Just above the knee is the sweet spot for most men. There’s science behind wearing a shorter length if you're short (to elongate the legs) and wearing a longer length if you're taller (to maintain proportions). But I say choose taste over facts! There’s a short out there for every occasion. Thomas: I'm a fan of a shorter short. Being under 6ft, I've found it works well on my frame and makes my legs look a bit longer. That said, everyone should wear what they feel good in. If you're unsure, anything above the knee is usually a good place to start. ## What’s trending at the moment? Nick: A 70s-inspired athletic short. Typically elasticated waist, nylon material, scalloped side vent, with a shorter inseam. A popular pair being the Adidas Sprinter Shorts. Thomas: Shorts are definitely getting a little longer this season, and I'm seeing a lot more pleated styles around. It feels like a natural follow-on from the wider shift towards pleated trousers. I'm also very happy to see denim shorts making a comeback. That's one trend I'm fully behind. ## What’s the biggest misconception men have about shorts? Nick: Tighter fit means smarter. Not only is that fit uncomfortable for daily wear, it also looks bad because there’s no flow of movement to the outfit. Thomas: That they're an afterthought. A lot of people spend ages finding the right trousers, then treat shorts as purely functional. The fit matters just as much. Nick: A quality vest, with a relaxed blazer over the top. For tailored shorts, I would add a belt for simple styling elevation, and some leather fisherman sandals. Thomas: At the moment, I'm enjoying a shorter short – I've been living in a pair of [Walter Denim shorts](https://walterdenim.com/products/light-wash-denim-shorts) and some pleated styles from [M&S](https://www.awin1.com/cread.php?awinmid=1402&awinaffid=69421&platform=dl&ued=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.marksandspencer.com%2Fl%2Fmen%2Fmens-shorts). Most days I'll wear them with an oversized linen shirt and deck shoes. Easy and comfortable. ## Should you ever tuck your shirt into your shorts? Nick: Yes, but only if it looks intentional. A relaxed half-tuck or full tuck, with shirt buttons open, works very well. Thomas: I quite like a tucked knitted polo with shorts. It depends on the outfit, but when the proportions work, it can look really good without feeling too done. ## Would you wear shorts to the office? Nick: Only if the dress code allows and they're tailored. A smart pair of shorts with a linen shirt and loafers can feel polished without looking too casual. Thomas: Definitely. There are loads of ways to make shorts feel more put-together. I'd probably go for a pleated or chino style with a shirt. If your office is more relaxed, throw on a vest underneath and leave the shirt open. ## What’s your biggest shorts no-no? Nick: Skinny. They throw off your proportions and instantly date an outfit. Thomas: Skinny chino shorts with a rolled hem have never really worked for me.
