Suffice to say St James’s has plenty of old-school credentials – but there’s plenty going on to keep it firmly out of retirement. As autumn sets in, it’s a good time to rediscover the neighbourhood, from new-season wardrobe staples and long lunches to galleries and post-work drinks. Here’s everything you need on your radar this season... Created in partnership with ST JAMES'S ## SHOP Jermyn Street remains the heart of St James’s menswear, with [Turnbull & Asser](https://turnbullandasser.co.uk/collections/see-all-ties?), [Emma Willis](https://www.emmawillis.com/), [Sunspel](https://www.sunspel.com/) and [Monte Lys](https://www.montelys.com/) covering everything from beautifully made shirts to the sort of understated basics that quietly become the most worn things in your wardrobe. Then there’s [Lock & Co](https://www.lockhatters.com/?srsltid=AfmBOoovKpa4h26gxYipsKHTdtNj4Dj75majVoha8atLcn9xNZbh6aaJ), founded in 1676, where 350 years of hatmaking expertise makes buying a new cap feel marginally more consequential than it probably is. The charm is in the mix. These are businesses built on craftsmanship and longevity rather than whatever happens to be trending this week, but the area isn't stuck in the past. Contemporary names sit comfortably alongside the old guard, making St James’s a good place to come when you want to sort out the autumn wardrobe rather than reinvent it. At [Scully](https://www.scullyrestaurant.com/) in St James’s Market, chef Ramael Scully draws on his Malaysian childhood, Sydney training and travels through the Middle East, Russia and Europe, resulting in food that is difficult to put neatly into one box – which is usually a good sign. Nearby, [Fallow](https://fallowrestaurant.com/) brings a modern British approach to the market, while [Toba](https://tobalondon.co.uk/) offers Indonesian cooking. There’s also [Jul’s](https://julslondon.com/), the Mediterranean restaurant on Waterloo Place, where the mood shifts from long lunches to late-night cocktails as the evening progresses. Between them, there’s very little excuse for defaulting to a desk lunch. For something more traditional, [Franco](https://francoslondon.com/)’s on Jermyn Street has been a St James’s fixture for decades. It’s the kind of place that works equally well for a proper lunch, a coffee or the increasingly rare art of sitting somewhere without immediately opening a laptop. St James’s has one of London’s strongest concentrations of commercial galleries, particularly around Bury Street, so it’s worth leaving some room between lunch and dinner to explore. [White Cube](https://www.whitecube.com/) at Masons Yard is the obvious contemporary stop, while [Philip Mould](https://philipmould.com/) and [Panter & Hall ](https://www.panterandhall.com/)on Pall Mall offer something different. [Thomas Dane Gallery](https://www.thomasdanegallery.com/) on Duke Street is another worth knowing, particularly if you prefer your art a little less predictable. Then there are the smaller specialists dotted around the neighbourhood, from Chinese art at [Stern Pissarro](https://www.pissarro.art/) to the photography and fine-art dealers around Jermyn Street. ## DRINKS When it comes time to wrap things up, [The American Bar at The Stafford](https://thestaffordlondon.com/american-bar/) remains one of the area's great drinking institutions. It’s been serving cocktails for generations and is considerably more enjoyable than attempting to recreate one at home after watching a three-minute tutorial. For something less formal, [St James’s Market](https://www.stjameslondon.co.uk/neighbourhoods/st-james-s-market) brings together a good selection of restaurants and bars around its pedestrianised square. It's particularly handy for an after-work drink when you want to stay central. St James’s has a storied past but that's not really why you come. You come because the clothes are good, the food is exceptional and if you're lucky, you can leave having bought something you didn't know you needed.
