# How To Watch Sport In Style

Sports hospitality is raising its game. As a new kind of crowd demands a world-class experience to go with its world-class live action, the best hospitality suites are starting to look a lot like members clubs. Here’s the full story – plus five of our favourite places to watch sport in the UK.

Three colleagues pose for a photo that will soon be on Instagram. The manager is in the middle, light-blue shirt untucked, his arms around two of his top performers. The guy on the right has a black polo shirt on. All three are wearing lanyards. It’s a corporate offsite, but the manager is José Mourinho and he’s flanked by two of his first-teamers at Real Madrid, Denzel Dumfries and Yan Diomandé.

A lot of Real Madrid players showed up for last month’s Grand Prix, the city’s first in 45 years. England’s Trent Alexander-Arnold was there. Jude Bellingham brought his brother Jobe along. Earlier in the F1 season, Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi went to the race in that city. Another World Cup winner, Paul Pogba, popped up last weekend at the NFL’s first-ever game in Paris not just to be photographed, but as a special guest photographer on the sidelines.

Overlapping commercial interests might explain some of the appearances and the stunts, but the effect is real. As social media turns the world’s biggest sporting occasions into lifestyle events, a lanyard has become a status symbol. It puts you close to the action, and that’s where people want to be.

Don’t have a trophy cabinet at home or a brand ambassador deal with a fashion house? You have to find your own way into the best seats. That used to mean waiting for an invitation from a client or a boss, but people have become more proactive about buying their own way in. And now that they are spending their own money, they expect more than the room-temperature white wine and calcifying buffet that used to define a day of sports hospitality.

Providers have stepped up. In London, there’s a chef’s table at [Tottenham Stadium](https://www.tottenhamhotspurstadium.com/). A cheese trolley glides through the grounds around Wimbledon’s Centre Court. Pre-match caviar bumps are on offer at Twickenham. At Fulham FC, you can eat in Michelin-recognised [Constance](https://constancerestaurant.com/) before moving smoothly into halfway-line seats for the game.

On the biggest days in British sport, food has become a focus. The difficulty of cooking at scale always used to be the explanation for disappointing hospitality fare. The excuse no longer holds. Andrew Wong, the chef behind Pimlico’s two-starred Chinese restaurant [A.Wong](https://www.awong.co.uk/), had a concession at Wembley for this year’s FA Cup Final. Since he closed the original [Le Gavroche](https://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/tickets/hospitality) a couple of years ago, Michel Roux jr has helmed Le Gavroche at The Lawn during Wimbledon fortnight. Adam Byatt is the Michelin-starred name overseeing Constance, but the busiest big-name chef in sport is surely Tommy Banks.

Through the year, the Yorkshireman – who has two Michelin-starred restaurants in his home county – can be found leading kitchen teams at Lord’s, Twickenham and Sunderland’s Stadium of Light. It’s not just that he loves cricket and rugby, and is a lifelong fan of the Black Cats. “The atmosphere in a sports ground is very adrenaline-filled and you feel the sense of occasion when you’re cooking,” he tells us.

While the dining has got finer, Banks has noticed the atmosphere in hospitality suites getting looser since Lord’s first challenged him to “create the best restaurant in world sport, no compromises” a few years ago. The better food is drawing in couples and groups of mates, but the décor is helping too. The new crowd feels at home in a members club, and that’s what they’re getting. [Soho House](https://www.sohohouse.com/house-notes/issue-006/events/f1-house-44-silverstone) has popped up at Silverstone, while [Ralph Lauren’s Polo Bar](https://www.instagram.com/thepolobar/?hl=en) – New York’s foremost exponent of old-money clubbiness – was at Wimbledon this year. Fulham FC has gone further, opening an actual members club inside [Craven Cottage](https://www.fulhamfc.com/visit/craven-cottage). At each of these places, and everywhere else on the list below, the sport is still the main event, but they’re getting the details just right too.

## 5 OF THE BEST PLACES TO WATCH SPORT IN THE UK

## Sky Deck, Fulham FC

Right on the Thames, the seven floors of Fulham’s new Riverside Stand house everything from underground event venues and street-food stalls to Adam Byatt’s Constance restaurant and the three-floor Lighthouse Social members club. On matchdays at Craven Cottage, the street-food stalls flip into beer concessions, Constance does a special service, and the members club becomes a three-floor hospitality space called the Sky Deck. Here, guests can wander freely between levels and outdoor terraces and boldly designed interiors. Bookending the stand are the Fulham Pier hotel (whose polished suites and vast penthouse with terrace can be booked on matchdays) and the Sael Spa (it’s a private club for now, but we’ve heard talk that some sort of spa-plus-match package could be on the way).

## The East Wing, Twickenham

The East Wing is the home of rugby’s top tier of hospitality. On the biggest matchdays – including November’s all-new Nations Championship Finals Weekend – Michelin-starred Tommy Banks is in the kitchen, turning out four-course menus that always use British ingredients and sometimes nod to the cuisine of the opposition. Nyetimber, Whispering Angel and Guinness pour all day in the sprawling suite as ex-pros do meet-and-greets. Seats for matches are always nicely close to the halfway line.

## The Vale, Silverstone

The Vale opened at this year’s British Grand Prix. It sits beside the paddock entrance, looking over the pit-lane entry and the final run of corners. In its first year, the ground floor housed Labombe by Trivet, from chef Jonny Lake and master sommelier Isa Bal – the team behind two-Michelin-starred Trivet in London Bridge. There were Japanese small plates on offer upstairs, alongside a music lounge, a bar and a terrace. Drivers and team principals dropped in across the weekend, Pete Tong played a DJ set, and on Saturday and Sunday the space turned into an invitation-only party once the racing finished. Guests could arrive by helicopter, and stay over trackside at [Escapade](https://escapade.silverstone.co.uk/).

## Le Gavroche at The Lawn, Wimbledon

Like the Royal Box, the Ralph Lauren Suite – made over as an outpost of the brand’s New York Polo Bar this year – is invitation only. If a gilded envelope doesn’t land on your doormat for 2027, there is space for you at Le Gavroche. For half a century it was London’s most distinguished French restaurant. It now exists only at Wimbledon where, in elegant surrounds, Michel Roux jr and his longstanding team deliver a tasting menu featuring wine pairings and a 20-strong cheese trolley.

## House 44, Silverstone

House 44 is Lewis Hamilton’s collaboration with Soho House: a suite inside the F1 Paddock Club, designed in members-club style and set at Abbey, with views of Silverstone’s pit-lane exit and the run into Turn 1. Hamilton’s helmets and pieces from his Plus 44 collections are on display, and the bar serves Soho House cocktails. A three-day pass includes a Paddock tour, a support-race grid walk and priority access to the podium celebration. This year, Sir Lewis stopped by in person to toast the suite’s first birthday.
