10 Minutes With… Austin Butler
Today I’m wearing the uniform I wear most days – a white t-shirt and jeans. You can’t go wrong. My off-duty style is usually just a variation of this combo. I don’t like having to think too much about what I’m wearing unless it’s for a red carpet. I remember being a kid and hearing about ‘style rules’ and what to wear, and what not to wear. Over time though, particularly in the industry I’m in, you realise how cyclical fashion really is. So, quoting Yves Saint Laurent himself, the piece of advice I live by is, ‘Fashion fades, but good style is eternal.’
My style has definitely evolved over time. My advice for finding your own style is to stay true to what makes you feel good. It’s simple, but we’ve all been stuck in that trap of putting on what looks good on someone else, then not actually feeling confident in it, or not feeling yourself. So, stick with your gut and be guided by your own compass of what makes you feel confident.
Steve McQueen and Paul Newman are some of the guys whose style I’ve always been drawn to – particularly their takes on timeless essentials. Film has always been where my inspiration has come from. I still remember first watching Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke and seeing those iconic images of Steve McQueen on a motorcycle. I saw pieces and clothing I resonated with through these people and now work them into what I wear day to day.
Wearing fragrances for me is really similar to putting an outfit together. That’s why I’ve always been pretty passionate about scent. I find fragrances are essentially an expression of what I find appealing, what my style is drawn to, and what makes me feel my best. The special thing about fragrance is it creates this atmosphere and aura that surrounds and stays with you all day.
Floral, woody and amber-based notes are my favourite. That’s probably why I’m genuinely such a fan of the YSL Beauty MYSLF le Parfum. Intensifying all of these notes in such a cool way, it’s longer lasting than anything else I own. It’s also versatile, thanks to the addition of orange blossom which makes it feel wearable in the heat of summer. The black pepper and the woodier notes have a warmth that’s perfect for the colder seasons.
Shooting the campaign for the MYSLF le Parfum was special. We shot it in Mexico City –somewhere I had always wanted to travel to. That in itself was a win, but I was also able to be on set with one of my favourite directors, Julia Ducournau, and one of the greatest cinematographers of all time – I dreamt of working with Benoît Debie ever since I watched Enter The Void years ago.
In truth, I don’t use many grooming products day to day. Typically I’ll just splash some water on my face in the mornings and keep things pretty simple. However, recently there’s been this one product that a make-up artist I work with in New York has been using on me that I had to pick up for myself. It’s from a brand called Circa 1970 and it’s just a simple face oil. After I wash my face, I’ll apply a little to keep my skin moisturised. I love the way it feels.
I’m a huge coffee guy. I love the way it fills the house with that smell in the mornings. It’s become a bit of a ritual for me. I’ve started to take it more seriously now and invested in a great espresso maker that a friend of mine who owns a coffee shop recommended. My go-to is an oat flat white.
My death row meal would be some kind of pizza or pasta. I had the most incredible penne arrabbiata when I was in Rome which I’d gladly have as my last meal. When I’m in London, The River Café is my favourite place to go. And for the best pizza in the world, it has to be Roberta’s in Brooklyn.
