The Last Days Of American Crime

El Presidente

From Armando Bo, the Oscar-winning co-writer of Birdman, this new series satirises a sporting scandal that rocked the world. In 2015 accusations of corruption engulfed football’s global governing body Fifa, leading to the arrest of some of its highest-ranking officials. This Spanish-language tragicomedy focuses on the rise and fall of Sergio Jadue, a small-time Chilean football manager who became an unwitting FBI informant, exposing one of the largest networks of bribery, fraud and money laundering in history.

When aspiring actor Greg Sestero (Dave Franco) forms a budding friendship with the mysterious and eccentric Tommy Wiseau (James Franco) the two decide to independently produce their own Hollywood movie. Written, directed, produced and starring Wiseau, The Room is often hailed as the best worst film ever made, famed for its nonsensical script and unorthodox production process. The Disaster Artist is a biographical comedy based on Sestero’s memoir of his involvement in The Room, chronicling how, despite the odds, it turned out to be a cult classic.

Das Boot Season 2

The German World War 2 drama returns after a cliffhanger ending to its first season. A sequel to Wolfgang Peterson’s incredible Oscar-nominated 80s film of the same name, it takes place nine months later, in 1942, with a fresh cast of characters. The plot centres on an inexperienced U-boat crew working to complete a secret mission out at sea. Meanwhile, on land a German woman questions her allegiance to the Nazis when she gets caught up in the French resistance movement in the small town of La Rochelle.

Wasp Network

It’s a big month for Edgar Ramirez. As well as starring in The Last Days of American Crime, he’s the lead in political thriller Wasp Network. He plays René Gonzalez, a pilot who leaves his wife (Penelope Cruz) and daughter in Havana to join a spy ring in Miami. Based on true events, the film tells the story of the Cuban Five: the intelligence officers tasked with infiltrating Cuban-American organisations working against Fidel Castro, and who were later convicted of espionage and other crimes.

Athlete A

In 2016, journalists at the Indianapolis Star started to investigate the Team USA gymnastics set-up, finding that lax policies had enabled systematic sexual abuse of young gymnasts by team doctor Larry Nassar. This documentary follows the award-winning reporters who broke the story and gives a voice to the victims. ‘Athlete A’ – now identified as Maggie Nichols – was the first of hundreds of victims to come forward, prompting a litany of abuse allegations that continue to make waves in the world of gymnastics today.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

For the first time in its history, the Eurovision Song Contest has been cancelled. By coincidence, Netflix can offer a fine substitute for the much loved and much derided music competition. Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams play Icelandic singing duo Lars and Sigrit, who are chasing victory with their entry ‘Volcano Man’. Set in the 70s heyday of Eurovision, this parody also stars Pierce Brosnan, Dan Stevens and, naturally, Graham Norton.
