April’s Hot List

April’s Hot List

/

It’s an exceptional month, but the SLMan Hot List still has all the inspiration, recommendations and ideas you need to see you through. From TAG’s smartwatch to Bob Dylan’s first new track in eight years, here’s our roundup of the new things to see, read and check out in April…

CLOTHING: Outstanding Co.

Independent e-retailer Blacksmith Store stocks a carefully curated selection of handpicked apparel and accessories from around the world. Product availability and shipping remain unaffected for the time being. In fact, it’s just brought Korean brand Outstanding Co. to the UK. Inspired by vintage Americana from the 50s to the 70s, Outstanding Co. spans Ivy League styles to military and workwear pieces. Highlights include some vintage sweaters – ideal for WFH.

MUSIC: Bob Dylan

Scheduled to tour Japan this month, Bob Dylan was, of course, forced to cancel. As some sort of recompense for his fans, the great man has uploaded a new track to his website. Called ‘Murder Most Foul’, it is introduced as follows: “This is an unreleased song we recorded a while back that you might find interesting. Stay safe, stay observant, and may God be with you.” It is the first new release from Dylan in eight years and comes in at a lockdown-friendly 17 minutes long.

FILM: Extraction

Chris Hemsworth stars in this full-throttle action-thriller that’s written by Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo and released straight onto Netflix on 24th April. In an underworld of arms dealers and traffickers, a young boy is kidnapped and held in a near-impenetrable city, becoming a pawn in a war between notorious drug lords. Hemsworth plays Tyler Rake, the black-market mercenary who gets emotionally involved as the rescue mission becomes a race to survive.

WEBSITE: Hims

Newly launched men’s wellness brand Hims reports that only one in every ten guys feels comfortable talking about their looks and health with their doctor. With that figure in mind, it’s opened a one-stop shop for male grooming and health. With a focus on hair loss and erectile dysfunction, it is designed to give men easier access to the care they need. Request a free consultation and you’ll be connected online with a doctor who can review whether a treatment is right for you. There’s also a useful blog answering FAQs such as: does wearing a hat cause baldness?

BOOK: Notes From An Apocalypse By Mark O’Connell

This new book from the prize-winning author of To Be a Machine feels more timely than ever. Out on 16th April, it zooms in on men and women who spend their lives preparing for the end of the world. Funny, affecting and occasionally terrifying, Notes From An Apocalypse sees O’Connell travelling the globe to meet American survivalists, would-be Mars colonists and billionaires hiding out in New Zealand to ask questions about the state of life on Earth in an attempt to come to grips with the future. The upshot is a surprisingly optimistic view of a world in flux.

SERIES: Sunderland ’Til I Die

The first series of Sunderland ’Til I Die focused on the northern football club’s disastrous 2017-18 season. Tough watching for the team’s supporters, it was addictive TV for the neutral. Indeed, the unceasing loyalty of the die-hard fans made for a compelling human story that drew in even those who don’t usually follow football. For the just-landed second series, the cameras once again have privileged access to tell the story of life at a troubled organisation that’s full of good people trying their best.

Supported by a campaign starring Robert Pattinson, it’s a great scent to bank for summer.
