Take us back to 2010, Oliver – why did you launch the brand?
I wanted to devise my own summer brand inspired by my love of travel, colour and nature. And I wanted that brand to serve a greater purpose. The eureka moment came with a charity exhibition in London of life-size baby elephant sculptures painted by well-known artists. ‘Trunks for Trunks’ clicked and I decided to dedicate my swimwear brand to saving elephants.
What makes you different from other brands?
My aim is to design the perfect wardrobe for the ultimate holiday, so quality, comfort and performance are all key. Our fit is comfortable, but tailored just enough to also be smart. I am also really proud of my prints – and our purpose in giving back to nature. I believe it is the biggest luxury to be able to give back to the planet, and the brand holds a special place in people’s hearts when they learn all about our conservation work.
What are your best sellers?
Our men’s swim shorts in an array of prints, with matching shorts for boys. Customers also love our classic linen pieces for a timeless summer look.
What’s new for this summer?
We have some amazing new prints drawing attention to endangered species. The ‘Eye of the Tiger’ print is one of my favourites. The critically endangered Sumatran tiger is hidden within hand-drawn tiger motifs in vintage hues of sand and chambray blue. The tigers are lost in the overall geometric print, signifying how these majestic tigers are almost lost in the wild.
Your swim shorts come in so many different colours and prints – any rules on clashing colours and prints?
None! Our brand is about being happy and being comfortable in yourself. Be relaxed, be comfortable and we always say: wear it how you want to. If you want to go for a printed set with matching shirt and shorts, you can. If you want to mix and match, clash or co-ordinate, you can. If you prefer to keep it classic, we have the smart basics for that too.
What are your style rules for men when it comes to summer?
That depends on where you are. For summer in the city, I think linens are essential for a comfortable smart-casual style. We have trousers and shorts, as well as the long and short-sleeve shirts, which can still look smart in town and are great in the heat. I love to go to the Caribbean – there you need nothing other than one of our organic cotton tees and a pair of our quick-dry trunks, made from recycled plastics.
What's your favourite way to style the pieces?
I personally love to pair our printed swim shorts with a white or navy linen shirt. It’s a timeless look and looks great on everyone.
