The New No & Low Alcohol Drinks To Know

The New No & Low Alcohol Drinks To Know

/

Whether you’re embracing Dry January wholeheartedly or just looking to cut back a bit after an eventful 2020, a new generation of no and low-alcohol drinks specialists are making things a lot easier – and tastier – than they used to be. From a smoky whisky replacement to an alcohol-free spirit made by the Artesian’s former head bartender, here are 12 new lighter options to try…

BEER

Beavertown Brewery Lazer Crush, £1.60

Beavertown Brewery’s newest IPA just happens to be alcohol free. Rather than brewing with small amounts of malt or dealcoholizing after fermentation, for Lazer Crush the team used a clever strain of yeast that fully ferments the crisp pilsner malt without producing alcohol and adds a hint of peachy fruit. Next comes heavy-duty hops: azacca for ripe mango with a hint of fresh pine, amarillo for notes of sweet orange, and citra for the signature citrus and grapefruit bitterness that an IPA requires. The result is a 0.3% sip that tastes so much better than those godawful 0.0% beers of yesteryear.

SPIRITS

Mary, £23.90
At 6% ABV and nine calories per 25ml serving, Illogical Drinks adds a splash of booze to its botanical new launch. Mary’s fresh, dry taste comes from sustainably sourced plants including basil, thyme, sage, coriander seeds, angelica roots, pine needles and juniper. A delicate green spirit, packing bright, zesty herbal flavours with a touch of fresh citrus, it works excellently with tonic water.

Cotswolds Dry Gin Essence, £14.95
Cotswolds Dry Gin Essence is full strength at 46% ABV, but you only need a little bit of it. It’s been specifically designed by Cotswold Distillery to reduce the amount of alcohol required in gin-based cocktails while retaining the intensity of flavour. Made using ten times the botanical concentration of the distillery’s award-winning Cotswolds Dry Gin, you get a huge amount of flavour per unit of alcohol, meaning just 5ml is needed for a full G&T that has one-tenth of the alcohol (around 0.23 units) of a normal serve. Just fill a copa glass with ice and add five full drops. Top with 200ml of your favourite tonic water and garnish with a slice of grapefruit.

Fluère offers a fresh base for non-alcoholic long drinks and works as a versatile mixer for alcohol-free cocktails. Available in four flavours – original, raspberry, amber and smoked agave – the brand recommends serving 65ml of Fluère Original with 150ml of tonic water, lots of ice cubes, two sprigs of lavender and a few juniper berries to garnish. As you’d expect, the smoked agave makes a great alternative to tequila – ideal for booze-free margaritas.
