The Drive-In Cinemas To Know

/

Drive-in cinemas are set to return this summer, offering a novel way to watch films during lockdown. From Tom Kerridge’s posh take on a drive-in to an authentic 50s experience, here are seven worth knowing about.

At The Drive In, UK-Wide

At The Drive In is a cinema experience that brings a range of activities to several cities across the UK. Eighties classics and recent blockbusters will be preceded by entertainment such as stand-up comedy, bingo and silent car discos. Using a radio transmission kit from the biggest US drive-in cinemas, the sound will be broadcast straight to your car’s radio, while an LED screen provides quality visuals. Food and snacks will be available to order online through a mobile app and, in true 50s style, roller-skating waiters will bring your order to a drop off point by your car. With six shows per city – including London, Manchester, Leeds and Cardiff, there’s something for everyone, from family-friendly afternoons to late-night shows.

Food and drink – such as hampers, pizza, popcorn and retro snacks – can be ordered via your phone and will be whizzed over to you by waiters and waitresses on scooters and roller skates. Films on show include Romeo + Juliet, The Devil Wears Prada, Moulin Rouge and Parasite. Keep your eye out for more locations across the UK, set to be announced soon.

The Drive In, North London

New venture The Drive In launches at Troubadour Meridian Water on 4th July. Film fans can pitch up in their cars for the events, with films shown on a large screen and the sound piped in via radio. The screenings will adhere to social distancing restrictions, with cars parked two metres apart and tickets scanned through closed windows. Films announced so far include La La Land, Dirty Dancing and The Terminator. While the movies themselves are a mix of recent releases and old favourites, the experience itself will be inspired by historical drive-ins, with food and drink orders delivered by attendants dressed in 50s-style costumes.
