The Ultimate SLMan Running Playlist

Everyone knows a decent playlist is the ultimate workout motivator – and who better to create one than ultra-runner William Goodge? From 2Pac to Etta James, here’s an exclusive SLMan playlist for next time you’re pounding the pavement…

I have a very eclectic music taste. My playlists tend to reflect that – I never stick to one genre. They’re often a mix of what I'm interested in listening to in the moment, so it will usually be some new tracks plus a combo of some of my staple artists I love. It could be Teddy Pendergrass, 60s jazz and old-school R&B one minute – I really love soul artists like Seal, Luther Vandross and Stevie Wonder – then it can quite quickly pivot to Skepta, Dave and Rage Against The Machine.

I never aim for a certain pace. A lot of what I do is running to fill time and I’m always trying to slow down, so I don’t have to have anything too geared towards speed or going OTT crazy. But I do have one running playlist which is aggressive – all heavy rock, rap and drill – anything that gets me going.

I love live music. There are two experiences that are hard to get anywhere else in life – I almost feel envious of people who get to experience them – one is being an elite sports person playing in a stadium and the other is being a musician playing an arena. It’s the same kind of energy you get from witnessing sport and music that you can't get from anywhere else. I also like to listen to a lot of Tiny Desk Project on NPR’s YouTube. I run and listen to that, and if I find something really good on there, I’ll add it to my playlists. There are some great sessions – one of my favourites is a collab between Sting and Shaggy.
