Sheeps: Ten Years, Ten Laughs at Soho Theatre

Comedy trio Sheeps are performing at Soho Theatre this week. Until Saturday 21st January, there’s a 7.30pm showing each night when audiences can listen to sketches performed over their ten-year stint on stage. The group comprises Al Roberts (Stath Lets Flats, Starstruck), Liam Williams (Ladhood, Back to Life) and Jonno (Tennis Kings, Seinfeld), who started out at the Edinburgh Fringe with sketches like ‘Austin Powers goes to Hogwarts’ and were responsible for viral lockdown hit ‘Three Cowboys on the Range’. Expect more of the same and other silly skits.

Florence Knight x Niklas Ekstedt at Sessions Arts Club

From Thursday 19th to Saturday 21st January, chef Florence Knight will welcome Swedish chef Niklas Ekstedt (of Ekstedt at The Yard fame) to Sessions Arts Club for a three-night collaboration. Bringing his influential old Nordic cooking techniques to Sessions’s fire terrace, Niklas and Florence will serve a collaborative four-course menu prepared over burning coals and accompanied by paired wines and a cocktail on arrival. The menu remains under wraps until the event, but we’re expecting good things. Tickets cost £150pp.

Fabio & Grooverider and The Outlook Orchestra at Southbank Centre

Liven up your January with this DnB gig at Southbank Centre. Two pioneers of the genre – Fabio & Grooverider – will play their biggest tracks from the last two decades with The Outlook Orchestra on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st January from 8pm. The duo formed 25 years ago, but it was their performance at Boomtown festival last summer that put them back at the forefront of the genre they helped build. Expect to hear classics from their pirate radio days, plus some more recent bangers mixed with Bicep, Wilkinson and Overmono. Tickets start from £35.

Jab Residency at The Curtain Club

Founded by former England boxing team captain and ex-Bodyism trainer George Veness, Jab’s Mayfair club is one of the capital’s coolest spots to break a sweat. For the first time, it’s heading east for an exclusive, one-month residency at The Curtain Club, the members club at Mondrian Shoreditch. Running until 5th February, the residency is open to members, hotel guests and the public. Sessions include a mix of bag work and mat work for an authentic boxing experience. Prices range from £27.50 for a single session drop-in to £120 for one-to-one personal training.

Konbini Kids at The Rose & Crown

Japanese kitchen Konbini Kids has a new residency at The Rose & Crown in Kentish Town. From Tuesdays to Sundays until the end of the March, the team is serving its ‘Japanese convenience store’ menu, which includes sandos stuffed with fried chicken, shredded cabbage, Kewpie mayo and pickled cucumbers, or eggo mayo and yuzu with nori sheets. You can also tuck into donburi bowls topped with fried chicken and pickled veg, plus small bites like grilled rice balls and fried chicken with garlic, ginger and soy sauce. Wash it down with a Japanese beer or two.

London Short Film Festival

The annual London Short Film Festival kicks off on Friday 20th January with a week-long programme of film screenings, talks and events. Championing independent filmmakers and directors, some of its previous entrants have gone on to win big at Venice Film Festival and the Baftas. This year’s highlights include The Joy and Sorrow of the Here and Now series at Rich Mix in Shoreditch, based on the highs and lows of an unrequited love (Saturday 21st); Black Country at Genesis Cinema in Bethnal Green featuring films that explore the Black experience of British creatives (Monday 23rd); and Gothic at Curzon Soho, a mixture of uncanny and macabre shorts (Tuesday 24th). Tickets start from £5.

CELEBRATE CHINESE NEW YEAR

Bao

Bun expert Bao has created a special menu to ring in Chinese New Year this weekend. From Friday 20th January to Sunday 5th February, groups of six or more can book the private dining rooms at the King’s Cross and Shoreditch restaurants for a themed set menu (£39pp). You’ll start with boiled cull yaw dumplings, soy-glazed aubergine, and Taiwanese fried chicken before moving onto mains of scarlet cha shao gammon, roasted pumpkin with tofu and chives, and plenty of pork bao buns. Then, to honour this year’s animal, it’s sweet buns shaped into rabbits for dessert.

TRY A NEW WORKOUT

The Body Coach Studios

The Body Coach App, founded by Joe Wicks, is opening its first workout space in Shoreditch this weekend. From Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd January, guests can take part in a series of classes led by Joe and other fitness experts. Suitable for all abilities, choose from HIIT, yoga and strength classes, plus family sessions to get the kids involved. After each workout, you’ll get the chance to meet Joe to ask questions about your fitness journey. Each class costs £12, with all proceeds donated to charities that support youth community sports clubs.
