CAN’T DECIDE WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU? ALEX GLOVER - MASTER BARBER AS ADAM ATELIER, KNOWS THE QUESTIONS YOU NEED TO ASK YOURSELF...

How often will you be using it?
If you are shaving your head every few days, it’s better to get a more heavy-duty clipper.

How much do you want to invest?
Generally the more you spend, the more reliable the equipment, but no matter what your budget, do your research ahead of time and read up on the models you’re considering.

Are you planning to use it on your beard as well?
If so, opt for something with added extras, like a beard comb, or that states it can be used for personal grooming as well as on your head.

How short do you want your hair to go?
Shaving all over is one thing but, if you want to recreate a barber-cut short back and sides at home, you’ll need a guarded clipper.

Do you want mains powered or cordless?
If you do your grooming in the bathroom, cordless is your best bet. Opt for mains powered if you’re always forgetting to charge your devices.

Brave enough to go for an at-home fade while barbers remain shut? Here are Alex’s top tips...
  1. Give yourself a consultation. Think about the desired look and plan your moves. Remember that you can always go a little shorter but you cannot put the hair back on your head if you go too short, too quickly.
  2. Watch a few YouTube videos to get an idea of the movement your hand should make – this will ensure consistency.
  3. If your hair is quite grown out, clip the back and sides with a grade eight clipper to remove bulk first. Do not go all guns blazing with a grade zero!
  4. Start in reverse for the safest results. That means you should work down from the longest settings to the shortest.
  5. Don't go too high. Flick away from the parietal ridge to maintain a slight corner to the haircut.
