The Best New Fragrances For Autumn

/

Fragrances are most closely associated with memory and times past, but they can also redefine your present. Take autumn up a notch with one of these new scents…

Ianthe Oud, £225 | LBTY

LBTY is the in-house fragrance line of venerable department store Liberty. Its unexpected take on oud was created by world-renowned perfumer Nicholas Bonneville. Quite unlike the heady, smoky oud you might have smelt before, this soft iteration is kept fresh by top notes of mimosa and bergamot oil. A cluster of resinous notes in the base – agarwood, olibanum, guaicwood, patchouli and leather accord – deliver an intoxicating woodiness that makes this one good for both day and night.

Boy Of June Eau De Parfum, £225 | Bibbi

On first spray, this has a leathery quality that feels tough and smells smoky. As it develops on the skin, you get a warming fruitiness that has a little bite and reminds us of a crisp aftershave. Despite its depth and the fact it has heady notes of incense and patchouli, Boy of June blends into the skin nicely, so it never overpowers.

Mystic Moss Eau De Toilette, £190 | Dries Van Noten

Inspired by Dries van Noten’s sprawling garden in Antwerp and the patchouli plant he loves, this scent is green, fresh and botanical – look for notes of clary sage, oak moss and salt. The 200ml bottle means you get your money’s worth.

Allure Homme Sport Superleggera, £130 | Chanel

This full-bodied fragrance is just the thing to spritz on dark, dank mornings when you need a little extra get-up-and-go. It arrives in a cloud of citrus notes, but it’s not all light and super bright. Thanks to woody, amber notes and the inclusion of musk, Homme Sport’s Superleggera iteration has enough sensuality in the dry down to give it depth and density.

Big Sur Eucalyptus Eau De Parfum, £155 | DS & Durga

DS & Durga's big launch for AW24 is a scent that embodies the Brooklyn brand's motto, ‘Perfume is armchair travel’. Big Sur Eucalyptus evokes the green groves along the iconic highway on the California coast. Cold, crisp and fresh, this is a scent that’s going to shine in cooler weather. Expect notes of Pacific spray, rosemary, cypress, cardamom and magnolia.

Virēre, £115 | Aēsop

Summer may be over, but you’re not alone if you want to cling to its lightness and sun-soaked warmth through your fragrance. Aēsop’s latest drop is an homage to sunny afternoons spent sitting in the shade of a fig tree. Fig and bergamot bring a Mediterranean earthiness, while green tea adds a verdant freshness. The dry down of warm woods provides serious staying power, meaning you can revel in its elegance from morning ’til night.

Cologne Intense Collection Hinoki & Cedarwood, £160 | Jo Malone London

If you could capture the scent of autumn, it might smell a little like the latest addition to Jo Malone London’s Cologne Intense range. Deep, rich and woody thanks to hinoki wood and cedarwood in the heart and base, this aromatic juice also has a clean, green element that’s inspired by the Japanese art of forest bathing.

MYSLF Le Parfum, £95.20 (was £119) | Yves Saint Laurent

This floral-woody hybrid is a decadent option for autumn. In among the woods and florals there’s an appealing blend of citrus and spice (bergamot, cinnamon, cardamom and black pepper). That richness makes it a good after-dark fragrance – just to be sure, there’s a splash of vanilla bourbon in the dry down.
