The 10 Best Sunday Roasts In London

Winter has come, which means Sundays are best spent in the pub with a roast and a bottle of red. Whether you’re east or west, north or south, we’ve scoured the city to round up London’s best destinations for Sunday roasts – and handily sorted them for you by location.

Central

Blacklock, Soho

You know a Sunday lunch is going to be a good one when the meat all originates from the owner’s family-run farms in Cornwall. No question, the trilogy of roasts is the star of the menu: 55-day aged beef rump, lamb leg and pork loin served with golden potatoes, roasted carrots and crunchy crackling. Then there’s the cauliflower cheese and enormous gravy boat. Turn up hungry.

Temper, Soho

Serious cuts of meat are cooked over coal at Temper Soho making this basement smokehouse lively, dark and, well... smokey. The Sunday roast is a meaty showcase of farm-sourced Welsh lamb, Gloucester Old Spot pork and Belted Galloway beef. When you get served a yorkshire pudding as big as your head, you know you’re in the right place.

West

Harwood Arms, Fulham

Welcome to London’s only Michelin-starred pub. Head chef Sally Abé learnt in the kitchens of Gordon Ramsay, Phil Howard and The Ledbury’s Brett Graham, so her food is, of course, top notch. Sunday mains include braised jowl of Tamworth pork with crushed turnip, roast apple and mustard. You’ll need to book well in advance to get a table.

The Chelsea Pig, Chelsea

The Chelsea Pig is a new moniker for what used to be the Pig’s Ear. But fret not, the old menu still exists and Sunday roasts remain a classic affair: roast leg of Ryland lamb and 35-day aged topside of Hereford beef are served pink and juicy; and the pork is great too. All come with seasonal veg, golden roast potatoes, soft and chewy yorkshire puddings and glossy gravy. It’s hard, but try to save room for the classic sticky toffee pudding with gooey toffee sauce and thick yellow custard.

EAST

The Royal Oak, Bethnal Green

The roast menu at this Grade II-listed boozer spans seven-hour roast lamb shoulder to Hereford beef and free-range chicken. For veggies there’s a hearty stuffed roast pumpkin. All roasts come with a full set of trimmings: expect enormous yorkshire puds, crispy roasties, green vegetables and roasted carrots.

The Kenton, Hackney

The Kenton was runner-up in this year’s Observer Food Monthly Best Place To Drink competition. Sunday roasts come from street-food legends Carcass Ldn – expect the finest quality produce along with seasonal vegetables. All are served with golden crisped potatoes, yorkshire puddings, buttered greens, sticky red cabbage and a roasted bone jus. The dry aged beef sirloin is 45-day aged, ex-dairy cattle cooked to medium rare. The standout, however, might just be the herb-fed Norfolk chicken, cooked slowly overnight and incredibly juicy thanks to a higher fat content than regular birds.

South

Roast, Borough

You’d expect good things given the name. This is Sunday roast like your mum used to make it. Enjoy a traditional take with all the trimmings: look out for pork belly with mashed potato and Bramley apple sauce, but don’t discount the slow-roasted lamb shoulder and sirloin of Hereford beef. A fine place in Borough Market to feast and people-watch on a weekend afternoon.

The Camberwell Arms, Camberwell

An upscale Sunday roast offering – minus yorkshire pudding. You’ve been warned. If the lack of traditional trimmings doesn’t both you, gather your friends, book a table and order one of the many sharing options. Menu highlights are the slow-roast salt marsh lamb shoulder, which is served with garlicky potatoes and hot mint sauce for three. The Hereford beef, ale and marrow pie with mash and greens is borderline unmissable. Roasts are only served from noon to 4pm, so make sure you book an early table.

North

The Jolly Butchers, Stoke Newington

This pub is not just about the multitude of British and European real ale options on offer. Its Sunday lunch is just as impressive. Choose between a traditional and Indian-inspired feast: deliberate over Tandoori half-chicken or Pudhina leg of lamb, both with seasonal veg and garam masala duck-fat roasted potatoes; or stay classic with the ribeye or pork, served with rich, plentiful gravy, crisp potatoes and tasty yorkshires.

The Pig and Butcher, Islington

When you hear it takes three days to make its gravy, you start to get excited about a pub’s commitment to the art of the roast. The Pig & Butcher’s pulled Paddock Farm Tamworth pork shoulder is delicious, just like the roasted Lydden Court Farm lamb leg, roasted dry aged grass-fed Hereford beef sirloin and Label Anglais chicken crown cooked in lemon and thyme butter. All roasts are served with seasonal greens, creamed leeks, yorkshires and properly roasted, crispy beef-dripping roast potatoes – and, of course, that famous gravy.
