An F1 Chef Shares His Favourite London Sweet Treats
One of the best bakeries in London right now is Quince, not far from our shop in Islington. It’s an elite bakery with a diverse range of pastries that showcase the team’s amazing skillset. The team use a mix of interesting grains, so there’s always something new to try. Its founder Anna Higham is one of the best in the field. I love the savoury scones and seasonal hand pies – you can thank me later for that one.
If I had to choose my top three, alongside Quince I’d pick Fortitude Bakehouse in town and Tarn Bakery in Highgate. Fortitude is down a little cobbled street near Russell Square and serves excellent coffee too. Cakes, pastries, stuffed buns, school dinner-style cake with sprinkles – you name it, it has it. It also does the tastiest shortbread tarts with toppings like cherry cheong and pistachio, as well as a pretty perfect pain au chocolat. Over at Tarn, you have to try the summer berry tart.
For sourdough or a great loaf of bread, I go to The Dusty Knuckle, which has various sites around London. The potato sourdough is top notch, as is the egg chilli cheese focaccia, which is a breakfast of champs. Plus, the sandwiches are about as good as you’re going to get. Imagine corn fritter sarnies, meatball subs and cheese and tomato toasties.
The one item I’d cross town for is Tarn Bakery’s spanakopita scroll. It’s made with spinach, slipcote cheese, truffle raclette and za’atar. It is, in one word, unreal.
Another spot I love is Papo’s Bagels in Dalston. The amazing husband-and-wife duo Georgia Fenwick-Gomez and Gabe 'Papo' Gomez are behind it. It has a bit of a cult following, and for good reason – pretty much everything they do is epic. The poppy seed bagel filled with cold cuts is my usual order. You can also order a box of bagels online, with pots of the flavoured cream cheese ‘schmears’, like scallion or chive.
One bakery worth lining up for is Toad. You’ve probably seen the queues outside its Camberwell shop. People cross London to try the cakes, sweet and savoury Danish pastries and inventive patisseries treats. It also makes an excellent sourdough. The sesame white chocolate pain suisse is my must-order.
For the ultimate croissant or pain au chocolat, I rate Miel Bakery by Great Portland Street. The croissant has the perfect balance of buttery and flaky pastry.
For cinnamon buns, cardamom rolls or sticky morning pastries, I go to Maya’s Bakehouse in Tulse Hill. The cardamom rolls are some of the best I’ve ever tried. It also has a great selection of cookies, cakes and filled buns.
The most memorable bakery experience I’ve had in London was at Violet Cakes in Hackney. I ordered a piece of red velvet cake which was so epic, I still think about it to this day. Claire Ptak is a master at what she does.
