THE EXHIBITION: The In Crowd: Mod Fashion and Style 1958-1966

The Brighton Museum has laid on an exhibition dedicated to the 1960s youth sub-culture. Mod life provided an opportunity to rebel against the older generation, for young people to use their newfound financial and creative independence to escape into an identity based around music, fashion and drugs. Although taking their look from a diverse range of sources, Mods were quintessentially British in style and resolutely modern in attitude. The In Crowd: Mod Fashion & Style 1958-66 is supported by original Brighton Mod brand Ben Sherman. Alongside full outfits, clothing and accessories, the exhibition will also include contemporary photography, film and ephemera tracing the origins, development and enduring appeal of the Mods.

THE MUSIC BOOK: Live Forever By John Robb

In this definitive new book on Oasis, John Robb peels back the layers of Manchester’s best-known musical export, revealing a tale of ambition, ego and talent. From the estates of south Manchester to the heights of global stardom, Live Forever is a rollercoaster ride through the Gallagher brothers’ turbulent lives and the music that defined a generation. But it is also a portrait of Britain around the turn of the millennium, and the cultural forces and places that shaped, and were shaped by, two cocksure upstarts from Burnage – from art to fashion, football to politics. Playful, funny and irreverent, and drawing on dozens of interviews and first-hand stories, this book puts Oasis squarely in the pantheon of music royalty as the last great rock ’n’ roll stars.

More than a decade after his sudden death, James Gandolfini still exerts a powerful pull on television and film enthusiasts around the world through his charismatic portrayal of complex, flawed, but always human men. Film critic Jason Bailey traces Gandolfini’s rise, from bit parts to character roles he enlivened with menace and vulnerability, to Tony Soprano – the breakout role that would make him a legend – and onto a post-Sopranos career in which he continued to challenge himself and his audience.
