THE ADAPTATION: Frankenstein

January saw the release of Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu. Now its Gothic horror companion Frankenstein is set to arrive. Directed by Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of WaterPan’s Labyrinth) it stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, a scientist tortured by ambition, and man-of-the-moment Jacob Elordi as his monster (getting his ‘Gothic novel adaptation’ practice before starring as Heathcliff in next year’s Wuthering Heights remake). The film also stars Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz and Charles Dance.

THE BIOPIC: Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere

Set in the early 80s, this film charts the beginning of Bruce Springsteen’s career, as he struggles to reconcile the pressures of success with the ghosts of his past as he records his album NebraskaThe Bear’s Jeremy Allen White sings throughout – brave when you’ve got to channel one of the most distinctive voices of all time – but his vocals and mannerisms (plus his brown contact lenses) seem bang on in the trailer. It also wins anticipation points for starring Stephen Graham (Adolescence) and Jeremy Strong (Succession).

THE DRAMA: After The Hunt

This is a new Luca Guadagnino psychological drama starring Julia Roberts. It follows Alma Olsson, a college professor who finds herself at a personal and professional crossroad when a star student (Ayo Edebiri) levels an accusation against her colleague Hack (Andrew Garfield) that threatens to expose a dark secret from her own past.

THE HEIST FILM: The Mastermind

Josh O’Connor (ChallengersGod’s Own CountryLa Chimera) is usually the best thing in any film he’s in. Next up, he stars in The Mastermind, a heist film that also features Alana Haim (Liquorice Pizza) and Gabby Hoffmann (Transparent). In 1970s Massachusetts, O’Connor is James Blaine Mooney, an unemployed carpenter turned amateur art thief who plans his first big robbery. When things go haywire, his life unravels…

THE DOCUMENTARY: Mr Scorsese

The makers of this new documentary series enjoyed unrestricted access to Martin Scorsese’s private archives. They’ve anchored Mr Scorsese in conversations with the legendary director’s friends and collaborators such as Robert De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mick Jagger, Steven Spielberg, Sharon Stone, Jodie Foster, Margot Robbie and Cate Blanchett. Directed by Rebecca Miller, it’s a five-parter examining the themes that have fascinated Scorsese and informed his filmography (including GoodfellasThe DepartedRaging BullGangs of New York and Wolf of Wall Street) and revealing how his colourful life experiences have shaped his artistic vision.

THE CRIME DRAMA: The Last Frontier

The Last Frontier is a ten-episode thriller that follows Frank Remnick (Jason Clarke), the lone US marshal in charge of the quiet, rugged barrens of Alaska. Remnick’s jurisdiction is turned upside down when a prison transport plane crashes in the remote wilderness, setting free dozens of violent inmates. Tasked with protecting the town he’s vowed to keep safe, he begins to suspect the crash wasn’t an accident, but the first step of a well-crafted plan with far-reaching and devastating implications.

THE THRILLER: Down Cemetery Road

Author Mick Herron’s latest TV adaptation is a great series to watch if you’ve already binged your way through season five of Slow Horses. Another twisty thriller, Down Cemetery Road delves into the aftermath of a house explosion in a quiet Oxford suburb and the disappearance of a girl. Neighbour Sarah (Ruth Wilson) becomes obsessed with finding her, enlisting the help of private investigator Zoë (a formidable Emma Thompson). Soon, the two women find themselves in a complex conspiracy that reveals people long believed dead are still alive. Just the kind of gritty drama to hit the spot on autumn evenings.

THE FILM: A House of Dynamite

From Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt LockerZero Dark ThirtyPoint Break) comes A House Of Dynamite. When a single, unattributed missile is launched at the United States, a race begins to determine who is responsible and how to respond. A stellar cast includes Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Gabriel Basso, Jared Harris, Tracy Letts, Anthony Ramos, Moses Ingram, Jonah Hauer-King, Greta Lee and Jason Clarke. It will be screened at select cinemas on 3rd October, before landing on Netflix later in the month.

THE MONOCHROME STUNNER: Nouvelle Vague

Shot in black and white, Nouvelle Vague is a comedy-drama film directed by Richard Linklater (Before SunriseBoyhood). Starring Guillaume Marbeck as Jean-Luc Godard, Zoey Deutch as Jean Seberg, and Aubry Dullin as Jean-Paul Belmondo, it follows the 1959 shooting of Breathless, one of the first feature films of the New Wave of French cinema. It looks absolutely cinematic – and will surely be a must-watch for anyone who loves Paris.

THE BEHIND-THE-SCENES DOC: Champions: Full Gallop, Series 2

The second series of Champions: Full Gallop will go behind the scenes of the latest jump racing season, including the battle for the £500,000 David Power Jockeys’ Cup. With the stakes as high as ever, the show gives viewers an access-all-areas backstage pass to the biggest events in the racing year, including the Cheltenham Festival and the Grand National. Cameras will once again offer exclusive access to series one favourites including Harry Cobden, Sean Bowen, Harry and Dan Skelton, and Paul Nicholls, plus a host of new faces and big characters – such as teenage sensation Freddie Gingell – as they all compete in the 2024/25 season.

THE INSTANT CLASSIC: The Lost Bus

On first glance, the poster for this new Matthew McConaughey film looks a bit like a remake of Speed. However, The Lost Bus is inspired by real events. Directed by Paul Greengrass (The Bourne SupremacyUnited 93) the film is a white-knuckle ride through one of America’s deadliest wildfires, as a wayward school bus driver (McConaughey) and a dedicated teacher (America Ferrera) battle to save 22 children from the terrifying inferno.

THE SPORTS DOC: Saquon

Saquon Barkley might be a running back, but he has more star wattage than half the NFL’s quarterbacks. When he hoisted the Lombardi Trophy in Philadelphia Eagles green at this year’s Super Bowl, it marked the perfect culmination of a journey defined by unwavering self-belief. This feature-length documentary gives viewers a firsthand account of that journey, drawing on five years of video diaries recorded by Saquon as he navigated his career’s most challenging chapters: methodically battling back from ACL surgery and recovering the explosive power that defines his playing style, and enduring tense contract negotiations with the team who drafted him that ultimately lead him to a bitter division rival.

THE SERIES: Lazarus

Sam Claflin leads the cast in this gripping new thriller from Harlan Coben and Danny Brocklehurst – the duo behind The Stranger and Stay Close. Claflin plays a man who returns to his family home after the suicide of his father (Bill Nighy) to be haunted by experiences he can’t explain. What starts as grief spirals into something darker as he becomes embroiled in a web of cold-case murders, all while wrestling with the unsolved killing of his sister 25 years earlier. THE RETURN: The Diplomat, Season 3

Diplomatic tensions, moral messes, personal secrets – the third season of The Diplomat promises even more of what fans have come to expect from this slick political drama. Keri Russell returns as Kate Wyler, with Rufus Sewell as her husband Hal, as their globe-trotting lives collide with even higher stakes: specifically, there are power plays in Washington and the aftermath of major revelations from season two. Among the new faces, Bradley Whitford joins the cast as Todd Penn, husband to Allison Janney’s President Grace Penn.
