THE BOOK: Table Hopping by Dylan Jones
Ex-GQ editor Dylan Jones takes a witty, behind-the-scenes look at five decades of London’s restaurant scene in Table Hopping. It begins in October 1976, with Michael Caine, chef Richard Shepherd and entrepreneur Peter Langan opening Langan’s – a restaurant that quickly became a celebrity haunt and helped cement London’s reputation as an international dining destination. From there, Jones traces the people, restaurants and rivalries that have shaped the capital’s food culture, from Joe Allen, Le Caprice and L’Escargot to the rise of super-chefs, tasting menus, wine pairings and increasingly ambitious global influences. There are stories of larger-than-life chefs, famously difficult customers, critics, feuds, scandals and the occasionally questionable behaviour behind some of London’s most glamorous dining rooms.
