The SLMan Hot List: August
THE RESTAURANT
Plates
For a new kind of dining experience, look to Plates, which has been opened in Shoreditch by siblings Kirk and Keeley Haworth. Kirk was crowned Champion of Champions on this year’s Great British Menu – and following a successful residency in Dalston, the pair have launched their first permanent restaurant. Plates aims to change the perception of how fruits, vegetables and plants can be transformed, offering diners an eight-course tasting menu. You might start with a refreshing hibiscus and white tea granita served with poached peaches and soy custard; followed by English tomatoes served with homemade ricotta, raspberry and white kombu jam, frozen strawberries and a beetroot and buckwheat truffle. Fans of Great British Menu will be able to try some of Kirk’s top-scoring dishes, including his ‘Feast of Farah’ – a charcoal lasagne with layers of mung and urad bean and served with baby turnip, morel, rainbow chard and a miso and chive sauce – and ‘A Taste of Unity’, a raw cacao gateaux with sour cherry, coconut blossom ice-cream, African pepper, toasted macadamias and raw caramel sauce.

Jaguar TCS Racing has worked with David Gandy Wellwear to create the Formula E team’s official travel kit for the 2024 season. THE COLLAB
A.P.C. X Tame Impala
From the rise of neolithic-loving zine Weird Walk to the resurgence of lo-fi fright flicks, folk horror and 70s styling are having a moment. Don’t believe us? Just check out A.P.C.’s current campaign, starring Aussie psych-rockers Tame Impala and their long-haired frontman Kevin Parker. Fresh from shredding during Dua Lipa’s headline set at Glasto, Kev is front and centre of A.P.C.’s new video, which “explores Parker’s bold, maximalist creative vision through the lens of A.P.C.’s considered, minimalist design language”. As well as the minute-long video that merges the psychedelic colours of Midsommar with the iconography of The Wicker Man, there’s a clothing collection – think mules, bucket hats, tie-dye mohair beanies and lightweight alpaca-wool sweaters to see you through the rest of summer in style.

THE DRINK
Lockdown Liquor Co Mezcal Picante
Lockdown Liquor Co has teamed up with internationally awarded The Lost Explorer to create the Mezcal Picante. The Lost Explorer Espadín forms the drink’s mezcal base, teamed with fresh Mexican lime, agave nectar and clean heat from habanero pepper. Fresh and easy to drink, the herbaceous mezcal adds a light layer of smoke to give a different dimension to this fiery classic. To serve, pour into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake it up, before straining into an ice-filled, Tajín-rimmed rocks glass. Garnish with a lime wheel.

THE OLYMPICS COLLAB
Montblanc Meisterstück X Olympic Heritage Collection
1924 saw the Olympic Games take place in Paris, the launch of the classic Meisterstück pen, and the creation of the first ever Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix, at the foot of Mont Blanc. With its new Meisterstück X Olympic Heritage Collection, Montblanc celebrates the 100th anniversary of its greatest pen while paying homage to the centenary of the 1924 Games. From the collection, it’s the Resin LeGrand fountain pen catching our eye, clad in the official red colour of the 2024 Olympics. As ever with Mont Blanc, it’s all in the details: a handcrafted solid Au 585 gold nib is embellished with a javelin thrower, a reference to a vintage Olympic poster of that year.

THE FOODIE LAUNCH
Drake’s X St John Vol. 2
Following a sell-out collection in 2023, St John has partnered with menswear brand Drake’s for a second clothing drop. Launched last week, the St John by Drake’s Vol. 2 collection explores the world of the famous restaurant group outside of its whitewashed walls, imagining what founders Fergus Henderson and Trevor Gulliver might wear on producer visits, vineyard tours and long, leisurely lunches. Hero pieces for 2024 include brown hiking tees emblazoned with the St John pig, an ecru cotton potter’s vest with ample pockets, and long-sleeve jerseys with the embroidered motif. Those who loved 2023’s totes and caps can find them reinterpreted this year in softer checked linens and cotton twill, referencing the ‘Nose To Tail’ phrase that Fergus coined many years ago. Our pick? The Tobacco games blazer.

THE 90S THROWBACK
Gin & Juice
Inspired by their own iconic 90s track, Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg have done the decent thing and created a Gin & Juice canned cocktail. This month, the ready-to-drink cocktail made its way across the Atlantic for a UK launch party that hosted everyone from Eminem to Jude Bellingham. Currently available in four flavours – Citrus, Melon, Apricot and Passionfruit – Gin & Juice is made using real fruit juice and premium botanicals and aromatics, ensuring it is naturally low in sugar and calories (and a surprisingly manageable 5.9% ABV). Speaking to the hip-hop legends’ West Coast lifestyle, the eye-catching packaging features colourful Cadillacs and an obligatory ‘Parental Advisory Explicit Content’ logo.

THE SPORTS COLLAB
Pepsi X Pompeii
The Euros might not have ended well, but our love of football shirts endures. Now, Pepsi has teamed up with Spanish streetwear brand Pompeii on an exclusive football-inspired capsule collection. La Pretemporada is inspired by a professional football club’s pre-season summer stage, where – with the pressure off – players can embrace creativity, and the game mirrors the days of playing in the playground. The seven-piece unisex streetwear collection features t-shirts, jerseys, a windbreaker and a cap. Each piece features the new Pepsi logo – its first change in 14 years.
