The SLMan Hot List: July
The Book
The Seventh Dog
If you’ve already seen The Bikeriders – the new film starring Austin Butler and Tom Hardy – you’ll know it’s based on the photojournalism of Danny Lyon, who followed the infamous motorcycle club around in the 60s. If you want to explore further, check out The Seventh Dog, a photobook by the American snapper. Organised chronologically, the book tells the story of Lyon's 50-year-career, starting in the present day before going back to the beginning when he photographed the American civil rights movement. Through text and image – colour and black-and-white photographs, original photo collages, letters and Lyon's own writing – this is a story of Lyon's personal journey as a photographer.

The Chef Collab
Grenson X Isaac McHale
Grenson has teamed up with two-Michelin-starred The Clove Club to create the ultimate chef's shoe. Following a conversation between Grenson creative director Tim Little and chef Isaac McHale about there not being a decent shoe for chefs to complement their uniforms, the two set about developing a pair that could perform in the kitchen while looking good enough to wear in the restaurant. The resulting shoe is a hybrid of a smart derby upper with a sneaker sole, combining comfort with smartness – and made with easy-to-clean black bookbinder leather or white gloss leather. Even if you’re not the head chef in your household, these workwear sneakers could fill a hole in your shoe collection.

The Sporty Kit
Lacoste Olympic Heritage Collection
This month sees Lacoste pay tribute to its Olympic heritage with a new capsule collection. Dedicated to the 1924 Paris Games, there are eight pieces that have each been given a vintage look – from essential everyday polo shirts to running vests, caps and a waterproof jacket, each one “embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and French elegance”. First and foremost, we’re targeting the navy sports bag.

The Campaign
Brooklyn Brewery X Spike Lee
Filmmaker and proud Brooklynite Spike Lee has partnered with Brooklyn Brewery to create a brand film that champions the soul of the New York borough. The film is directed by King She, who has recently worked with Jay-Z, Adidas and Spotify, and directed the 2023 Rihanna Super Bowl halftime show. Lee's legacy goes back to 1988 when he directed the legendary Michael Jordan for Nike. Since then, his insight as an independent filmmaker – directing films including BlacKkKlansman (2018), Malcolm X (1992) and Do the Right Thing (1989) – has reshaped the filmmaking landscape with disruptive content that represents creative and culturally diverse audiences. Featuring a cameo from the man himself, the short film is set around a busy block and bodega.

The Launch
The River Cafe Cafe
The River Cafe Cafe is the much-loved Michelin-starred Italian’s first new opening since the original restaurant launched in 1987. Steps away from The River Cafe itself, the cafe and terrace will offer an all-Italian menu cooked by River Cafe chefs. In the mornings, there’ll be an Italian breakfast with River Café brioche and cakes, melon and peaches. Throughout the day, they’ll serve plates of prosciutto and mozzarella, seasonal vegetables such as grilled peppers in the summer, or roasted pumpkin, squash, and borlotti beans in the winter. Ice-cream coupes, specials and desserts will be served all day, while pastries, ice-creams, Italian hot chocolate, teas and coffees will be available to take away. In the evening, aperitivos and wines by the glass will be served with bowls of homemade crisps and Italian olives.

The Restaurant
The Park
Since the great Jeremy King opened Arlington this spring on the site of his first restaurant, Le Caprice, it’s been so well-received by former regulars and London foodies that it’s now pretty much impossible to get a table before 10pm. We imagine The Park – which he’s opening later this week – will soon be the same. In Queensway, it will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week, with brunch on the weekend. Decked out in handsome walnut banquettes and artwork by Horst P. Horst, this ‘new world grand café’ will have a menu of classics – think New England clam chowder, chopped cobb salad, a grilled four-cheese sandwich, Chicago-style hot dogs, lobster rolls and ‘bespoke’ sundaes.

The Tech
Moon Rover
From paps of Paul Mescal (in his short shorts) to England players warming up on the pitch this Euros tournament, we’ve noticed a return of wired in-ear headphones. If you’re after a high-tech pair that offers an unrivalled listening experience, look to Campfire Audio. This month saw the arrival of its limited-edition Moon Rover in-ear monitors. Made by hand in Portland, Oregon, the Moon Rover is packed with trailblazing tech and coincides with the wider rollout of lossless streaming – and it claims to provide superior sound to a wireless counterpart.
