THE COFFEE TABLE BOOK

Marvin E. Newman

This new book from Taschen is the first major career retrospective of remarkable mid-century street photographer Marvin E. Newman. Largely unknown outside a prestigious collector and gallery circle, Newman’s flawless technique and humanist sensibility shone through vivid New York cityscapes, riveting sports shots and other inventive images from across the US. Unlike his predecessors, Newman chose colour photography as the medium for capturing the people and energy of NYC. Almost 200 of his vibrant images, captured between the late 1940s and the early 1980s, have been pulled together in this rich coffee table collection. Newman died last year, aged 92. We think this is a worthy legacy.

THE FILM

The Apprentice

If you’ve also had Succession withdrawal symptoms, your suffering may soon be at an end. October sees Jeremy Strong (Kendall Roy) return to screens as another man caught up in scandals surrounding family wealth. The family in question? The Trump dynasty. Directed by Ali Abbasi and written by Gabriel Sherman, the film also stars Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump and examines the ex-president’s career in New York real estate through the 70s and 80s.

THE DRINKS

The Devonshire X The Newt

Last week saw two UK drinks heavyweights come together for a partnership no one saw coming. For autumn, The Newt in Somerset has joined forces with The Devonshire in Soho to make the estate’s ‘signature blend’ cyder available at London’s most-talked-about pub. The partnership is designed to encourage friendly competition between The Dev’s famous pints of Guinness and The Newt’s award-winning cyder, ‘uniting town and country in celebration of harvest season’. We’ll drink to that.

THE STYLE GUIDE

Icons Of Style By Josh Sims

Behind nearly every item in the modern wardrobe is a first of its kind – the definitive item, often designed by a single company or brand for specialist use, on which all subsequent versions have been based (and originals of which are now collector items in the booming vintage market). The T-shirt, for example, may now be an everyday item, but was created by American company Hanes for US Navy personnel at the turn of the 20th century before it was adopted by sportsmen and bikers. Other items have been designed for sport, farm work or protection, and made their way into everyday usage. Icons of Style examines, garment by garment, the most important and famous of these products, and how they have shaped the way we dress today.

THE ANNIVERSARY

Gant

Bernard Gantmacher started his career stitching shirts in New York’s Garment District. He went on to found Gant in 1949. Seventy-five years later, the brand is still loved for the preppy American sportswear style it helped to pioneer. Over the years, its team have gathered vintage Gant pieces from across the globe, curating an archive that reflects its history and the legacy. The brand’s new 75th Anniversary Collection includes a series of replicas based on these old treasures – from varsity jackets and harringtons to rugby shirts, striped ties and oxford shirts.

There are three items in the covetable collection: a five-colour, stained room divider, an angular coat rack and – Artek founder Alvar Aalto’s most famous item – the Stool 60. In this refresh, the underneath of the stool has been painted in an ultramarine blue – a nod to the vibrant linings of a Paul Smith suit.

THE CAR

Rolls-Royce Phantom Scintilla

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has unveiled a new model. The Phantom Scintilla’s design is deeply influenced by the marble Nike of Samothrace statue, which has been displayed in the Louvre since 1883 and originally inspired the Spirit of Ecstasy that sits on top of every Rolls-Royce bonnet. Pale blue and with the most intricate interior details Rolls has ever commissioned, it’s a must-see for classic car enthusiasts. Letting you down gently, we should tell you that only ten Scintillas are being made – and they’re all already accounted for
