THE HOTEL

Palazzo Talìa

Who knew film directors were so hospitable? First in 2024, Francis Ford Coppola opened Palazzo Margherita in southern Italy. Now Luca Guadagnino has overseen the conversion of Palazzo Talìa – a 16th-century school moments from the Fontana di Trevi. The visionary mind that gave the world Call Me By Your Name and Challengers has bequeathed us a maximalist boutique hotel where sensual interiors span the centuries to grand yet intimate effect: modern chandeliers are matched to the building’s original features, bold contemporary carpets share attention with ornate ceiling frescos. Start your evenings with oyster happy hour in the mirrored Bar della Musa, then slide into the timeless Tramae restaurant – or its leafy courtyard – for dinner.

THE INDIE FILM

Starve Acre

The run of great British folk horror films continues into September with Starve Acre, an unsettling film written and directed by Daniel Kokotajlo (Apostasy). Starring Matt Smith (fresh from his turn as Daemon in House Of The Dragon) and Morfydd Clark (Saint Maud, Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power, The Personal History Of David Copperfield), the film is based on the award-winning 2019 novel by Andrew Michael Hurley. In 1970s rural Yorkshire, Richard and Juliette Willoughby’s seemingly idyllic family life is thrown into turmoil when their young son Owen starts acting out of character. A sudden, tragic event brings grief and drives a wedge between the once happy couple. At Starve Acre, their remote family home, academic archaeologist Richard explores a folkloric myth that the ancient oak tree that once stood on their land is imbued with phenomenal powers. While Juliette turns to the local community to find some kind of peace, Richard obsessively digs deeper. To accompany the release, Kokotajlo has programmed a BFI Southbank and BFI Player season of films and television programmes that have inspired and influenced him. Roots, Rituals & Phantasmagoria runs from 1st September.

THE RETURN

Endo At The Rotunda

Endo at the Rotunda – the highly regarded restaurant from acclaimed third-generation sushi master Endo Kazutoshi – will reopen its doors on 17th September following a refurbishment. Its new era will be defined by the concept of ‘onkochishin’, a way of looking into the future through the perspective of the past. Designed in collaboration with architect Kengo Kuma, the space will see the bar area replaced with a wooden landscape-like seating area recalling the materiality of the natural world. The omakase experience will be informed by recipes and techniques derived from Endo’s grandfather, the first of the family’s sushi masters. Omakase will be served at the reconfigured sushi counter, now seating 10 guests to ensure a closer interaction between Endo and his guests. ‘Phone eats first’ will be an alien concept, as the use of tech will be discouraged at the counter to heighten the experience. We approve.
