THE COLLECTION

Toteme

Toteme’s first menswear is now exclusively available at MR PORTER. Founded in 2014 by Elin Kling and Karl Lindman, the brand takes a distinctly Swedish approach to understated design. The inaugural men’s collection centres on pared-back wardrobe staples, combining sharp cuts and lean silhouettes with considered materials and a restrained palette. Our picks include a trench coat, cut from a cotton-blend in a softly structured silhouette that falls just below the knee, and a pair of black loafers crafted in Italy from glossy leather. They’re finished with classic penny straps and hand-sewn apron toes.

THE ANNIVERSARY

G.H. Bass

This year is a big one for G.H. Bass. It’s 150 years since the brand was founded and 90 years since it created the world’s first penny loafer, the iconic Weejuns. To mark the milestones, G.H. Bass is launching a limited-edition capsule featuring some of its most recognisable styles. Expect anniversary versions of the penny loafer and Ivy League-inspired loafer, alongside Ranger and Camp Moc boots. Each pair will feature special anniversary detailing.

THE RESTAURANT

Kid

Sertaç Dirik of Mangal II is opening his first restaurant of his own this September, teaming up with restaurateur David Carter, the man behind Oma, Agora, Manteca and Smokestak. Kid will showcase Dirik’s Turkish heritage in Soho, drawing particularly on the food of Central Anatolia. The cooking will be rooted in the dishes and techniques Dirik grew up with, but with a focus on British produce and a more contemporary approach. Bread is central, with wood-fired tombik pide and sourdough pide cooked over the mangal, while meze includes homemade çökelek cheese with summer peas and cucumber. Larger dishes will focus on charcoal and wood-fired cooking, from Cornish lamb saddle with roast garlic and sivri peppers to slow-braised goat kid cooked in a traditional clay pot. Turkish coffee, tea, baklava and seasonal Turkish delights will round things off.

THE SCENT

Jo Malone London Sea Salt & Bergamot

Jo Malone London is heading out to sea with its latest fragrance. Fresh, mineral and distinctly coastal, Sea Salt & Bergamot is inspired by the wild waters of the Celtic Sea, opening with bright bergamot before settling into a woody base of driftwood accord. It follows in the footsteps of one of the brand’s bestsellers, Wood Sage & Sea Salt, but takes the idea of the British coastline in a different direction. Where the OG fragrance captures the feeling of a windswept shore, Sea Salt & Bergamot is designed to feel as though you’ve plunged straight into the water. The result is fresh without being overly aquatic, with a clean, woody finish that makes it particularly easy to wear.

THE DESTINATION

WatchHouse Borough

WatchHouse has opened its latest site opposite Borough Market. Designed by CAKE Architecture, the two-storey space – described as a ‘pub-meets-listening-bar setting’ – takes its cues from the history of London Bridge and Borough, combining warm timbers, tobacco tones and stainless-steel details with a distinctly contemporary feel. Upstairs, guests can settle in for WatchHouse’s seasonal coffees and Rarities, alongside breakfast, pastries and lunch options. Downstairs, things become a little more atmospheric, with an intimate listening-bar-inspired space designed for lingering over a coffee. With 30 covers and a location just moments from London Bridge station, it’s well placed for both a morning caffeine hit and a slower afternoon stop.

THE UPGRADE

Tomos Parry x United Polaris

Long-haul travel just got a little more appealing. Michelin-starred chef Tomos Parry is bringing his distinctive open-fire cooking to United Polaris business class as part of a collaboration with Netflix’s Chef’s Table. Drawing on his Welsh roots and his London restaurants Mountain and Brat, Parry has created an in-flight menu centred around British produce, featuring plenty of his signature grilled and charred flavours. Dishes include grilled beef fillet with beetroot, Caerphilly cheese and mustard; Welsh lobster with grilled peach and fennel; and wood-roasted Welsh lamb with smoked potatoes, broccoli and green sauce. There’s also halibut with laverbread pil pil and parsley potatoes. THE BOOK

Simple Too

For the three million home cooks around the world who loved Ottolenghi Simple, Yotam Ottolenghi and his co-author, test kitchen colleague Verena Lochmuller, set themselves the task of further paring down processes and ingredient lists, while keeping the vibrant, multilayered, surprising signature flavours loved throughout the world. Many of the dishes, such as braised halloumi with tomatoes and beans, or smoky tomato and feta prawns, are made in one baking tray, with no preparation at all – ready to put on the table in about 30 minutes. The recipes are designed for feeding family and friends, and feature plenty of Ottolenghi signatures such as za’atar, tahini, harissa and garlic. The book is published on 3rd September.
