A Chef’s Guide To Greece’s Foodie Island

It’s the London food set’s new favourite summer bolthole. Easy to reach by ferry from Athens and Mykonos airports, Sifnos has everything: great beaches, a creative scene and some of the best restaurants in Greece. Giorgos Samoilis spent his childhood summers here and is now the chef-owner of three of the island’s coolest places to eat. These are his tips for anyone who fancies their own escape to Sifnos…

What I love about Sifnos is its bright light that fills every cell in my body with all the positive energy in the world. Its life-giving force carries you through until nightfall – and might explain why the locals are extremely dynamic, passionate and deeply connected to their traditions, from cultivating heirloom vegetables and raising animals to cheese making, pottery and laying on fiestas. It’s also why every island morning begins with a coffee in my yard, praising the sun and feeling grateful for yet another day in paradise.

WHERE TO EAT

I love to drink my coffee at the traditional Kafenio Lakis in Apollonia, right next to the taxis. It’s great for people watching.

Ofelos is a lovely all-day café and meze spot that opened in Apollonia this summer. I could eat oven-baked chickpeas every day – and Ofelos does a good bowl.

Astro is a traditional taverna in Kastro serving great value-for-money dishes such as saganaki, kofta, meatballs and Greek pasta. Lots of the ingredients come from their own farm, Gerontis.

Cantina sits right on the beach below Kastro. We opened in 2020 with a dedication to local and seasonal ingredients, and we now have an even stronger focus on whole-animal use and cellar- or lab-driven ideas. These are expressed through seven-course tasting menus that change every day. Alongside this, we offer a wine programme featuring Greek and international special selections.

Pelicanos is now officially the best and most fun place to enjoy fish and seafood on the island. Our signature dishes include Greek blue crab cacio e pepe, oven-grilled octopus with potatoes, whole catch of the day cooked bianco, and Greek bluefin tuna otoro. We continue to create new dishes using only the finest Greek fish and seafood, staying rooted in traditional Greek flavours while also drawing inspiration from international cuisine. This summer, we’re hosting guest chefs from London and Paris on our terrace, where a bar overlooks the bay.

Right next door to Pelicanos, Lamarina has become an amazing hub for both locals and visitors, a place where people gather daily for bread from Betty’s Bakery, coffee, breakfast and, since last year, oven-baked traditional Greek dishes. This season, we are going even deeper into offering honest Greek food, cooked with care and at prices that remain accessible to everyone.

On rare evenings I’m off from my own restaurants (which doesn’t happen often), I love having dinner at Aggeles Butchery & Grill in Artemonas. The family raises their own pork, beef and goats, and you can either take cuts home or have them grilled on the spot – simple and incredible.

Afterwards, I head to nearby Kitrino Podilato for dessert. Definitely try the loukoumades with honey and ice cream (our local version of bite-sized doughnuts).

Nus serves a creative take on traditional cuisine down on the beach in Plati Gialos, where dishes are paired with rare Greek wines. Those dishes could include triple-cooked Naxian potato chips with wild herb salt, yoghurt dip; octopus carpaccio with mandarin filet, beluga lentils, sea fennel and urfa chilli; or Sifnian honey and eucalyptus semifreddo with pine nuts.

I also like to go to Sunset at Troullaki for grilled meat – such as lamb chops and chips – with a side of breathtaking views.

WHERE TO STAY

I love the vibe of the FOS Collection rental units, especially the ones in Faros. There’s something special about enjoying your morning coffee or a nightcap on the balcony, with uninterrupted views of the Chrisopigi Monastery – one of Sifnos’ most iconic landmarks.

Verina Astra is a stylish boutique hotel with beautiful views and an infinity pool over the Aegean Sea. It also has a restaurant called Bostani, and a spa.

Andromeda is a charming hotel in Exabela, which has a collection of traditional Sifnian properties, a pool and a pétanque lane. The great master of cooking and pastry Nikolaos Tselementes was born in this village.

WHAT TO SEE & DO

Starting from Faros beach, you can easily walk (about 15-20 minutes) to small, charming beaches like Fasolou and Glyfo. They’re quiet, beautiful and the perfect spots for a relaxed swim.

I highly recommend visiting Loumidis Family Farm to get insights into traditional island living and connect with the island. I’m obsessed with the local cheeses – whether aged and pungent or fresh and creamy.

Finally, for the best sundowners, head to the oldest bar in Sifnos, Old Captain Bar, down at the port of Kamares. It’s the ideal place for a drink before getting on the ferry to your next island.
