A Cool Hotelier’s Insider Tips For Verbier & Val D'Isère

Celebrated initially for reinventing Paris’s cocktail bar culture, Experimental Group now has speakeasies, wine bars, restaurants and hotels in Paris, New York, London, Ibiza, Menorca, Biarritz and Venice – plus Verbier and Val d'Isère. Here, co-founder Xavier Padovani shares his favourite restaurants, après-ski spots and locals-only favourites in the Alps…

I learned to snowboard at a pretty young age so I have spent a fair amount of time in the French Alps. I grew up spending holidays and weekends in Alpes d’Huez, Tignes, Meribel, Arêches-Beaufort, Avoriaz, Les Deux Alpes and Val D'Isère.

The Alps has the best skiing and snowboarding in the world. When we wanted to branch out from Paris, there was never a doubt in our minds that the Alps would be next. The Swiss and French Alps have some of the best terrains, and both Verbier and Val d’Isère are snow sure.

If you’re heading away with a group, book the restaurants ahead of time. The worst thing is trying to figure out where a big, hungry group can eat after a day on the mountain.

Verbier is spoiled for choice when it comes to food. I like Chez Dany for the vibe – there’s just something about a restaurant lost in the mountains. Le Dahu, just next to the lift at La Chaux, has incredible views best enjoyed with a spritz. And a fondue at La Grange cannot be beaten.

Le Rouge in Verbier is the very best place for après-ski. There’s always a great vibe and good music playing.

My favourite slope is the backside of Mont Fort in Verbier. But both resorts are great places for families and beginners. My kids learned to ski with Adrenaline in Verbier – the teachers are excellent.

If you’re heading away with a group, book the restaurants ahead of time. The worst thing is trying to figure out where a big, hungry group can eat after a day on the mountain. If you can, I’d even suggest booking the food ahead. A big fondue and loads of sides to share always goes down well.

There are some great hidden gems in Verbier. Our local friends won’t be impressed with me for telling you, but try to visit Café du Mont Fort in Sarreyer when you are in Verbier – it’s about a 15-minute drive from town and it’s really special.

We bring a twist to mountain hospitality. What Experimental offers is a contemporary take on tradition to an exacting clientele – and each element of what we do is well considered. On the design front, we brought in Dorothée Meilichzon in Val d’Isère and Fabrizio Casiraghi in Verbier, offering their interpretation of a mountain retreat. There is great attention to the food, wine and cocktails as well as weaving in local produce and winemakers, which sit alongside Experimental Cocktail Club at both hotels. Both have spas that offer incredible treatments, saunas and hammam – a real tonic for tired souls after a day on the slopes.

Inspired? Here’s what Xavier’s perfect three-day ski break looks like…

Day 1: Check into Experimental Chalet Verbier. Our driver will take you to Ski Service to prepare your equipment, then you can go up nice and easy to the slopes. If you have kids, get in touch with Adrenaline ski school, where kids can ski from morning to afternoon with excellent teachers. Start skiing from Tortin or Col des Gentianes and finish up at La Chaux, where you’ll have lunch at Le Dahu. After a few more runs, head to Le Rouge for après. Once you’re back down in the village, pop to the spa for a sauna, then off to St Bernard for a dinner of mountain cheeses, regional meats, seasonal vegetables and wines from the Valais.

Day 2: Let the hotel organise a guide to take you freeriding, and make sure to book Chez Dany for lunch, where the toast skagen is the best way to start. The owner will often be there, so be sure to say hi. After lunch, go for a few more runs and then it’s time for cocktails at Experimental Cocktail Club or No 8, followed by a dinner at Café du Mont Fort in Sarreyer. Then back to Verbier for a dance at The Farm, the oldest nightclub in the Swiss Alps.

Day 3: Head up to Cabane Mont Fort for impeccable views and an excellent lunch. Ski all the way down, perhaps with a pit-stop for a final spritz at Le Dahu, and one last trip to the spa before our driver takes you back to the airport.
