What To Do This Weekend 10.01.20

January doesn’t have to be a procession of quiet days and nights in. London is alive and there is plenty on offer around town. Need a laugh? Jimmy Carr’s doing stand-up. Want to get serious? There’s a daring Rembrandt exhibition in Dulwich. Here’s our full list of things to do this weekend…

SEE WORLD-CLASS STAND-UP HERE: Wembley Park Theatre

Perfect for a new-year pick-me-up, comedy superstar Jimmy Carr is on tour. The TV panel-show regular plays Wembley Park Theatre on Saturday and Sunday, entertaining audiences with a comedy spectacle full of original material. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy his dark humour and dry wit.

New year, new you… and all that. If you overindulged at Christmas and are looking to make a change for the better, then join this 40-minute DJ-supported workout and Q&A with fitness buff Joe Wicks. Joe has become a bit of an Instagram sensation with his easy (in one sense) HIIT workouts and meal prep videos. He seems just the person to kick off a mass workout and inspire people to get fit in 2020.

Spanish group Brindisa has opened Brindisa Kitchen Bar within Borough Market’s new communal dining area. The menu at the walk ins-only restaurant is inspired by an ancient Spanish pilgrimage, ‘La Ruta de la Plata’. Open from breakfast, the venue features a fish counter where diners can choose from the catch of the day, while enjoying bar snacks and salazones (salted meats and fish).

STAY HERE: Nhow London

Hot on the heels of hotels in Milan, Rotterdam, Marseille and Berlin, the uber-stylish Nhow group has opened its latest location in Shoreditch. The interior design is pretty wild, with a ‘London Reloaded’ theme featuring murals of the Queen on concrete walls and clashing prints everywhere. There’s also a state-of-the-art gym and a very British pub. The whole place is something of a spectacle and fun for a weekend staycation.

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN ART HERE: Dulwich Picture Gallery

Rembrandt is one of the most famous artists to have ever lived, with an instantly recognisable style thanks to his unique use of light. This exhibition displays 35 paintings, including some major loans from Paris’s Louvre and the Rijksmuseum in Rembrandt’s native Amsterdam. It uses atmospheric lighting and design to create a cinematic experience that will take spectators on a journey through some of Rembrandt’s most famous works, including Christ and St Mary Magdalen at the Tomb and A Woman Bathing in a Stream, A Woman in Bed and Dulwich’s own Girl at a Window.
