What To Do This Weekend 13.02.20

This weekend is dominated by Valentine’s Day, but there are plenty of exciting things going on in London if a candlelit dinner for two isn’t your vibe. From an afternoon celebrating Larry David to a motorbike show and video game fest in Wembley, here are the events to help you get the maximum out of your time off.

TRY ANGLO-FRENCH-AMERICAN FOOD: The Nitery

Don’t believe all three of these cuisines can be brought together in one harmonious whole? Challenge yourself at Gizzi Erskine’s is three-month residency at the St Martin’s Lane hotel. In a space inspired by the ‘niteries’ of early 20th-century Paris, the chef and food writer has put together a menu showcasing hearty comfort food (roast chicken with shoestring fries and bread sauce) and redesigned classics (sherbet lemon meringue pie). Don’t neglect the raw bar, which includes a novel combination of caviar and southern fried chicken skin.

MUSE ON ART & TECHNOLOGY: The Barbican

This exhibition digs deep into digital to reveal the powerful world behind artificial intelligence. Artist Trevor Paglen has laid out ‘From Apple To Anomaly’ as a display of over 30,000 individually printed photographs that are used to train AI networks. For anyone interested in digital technology, this is a fascinating window onto the ways in which machines form opinions of the human world. Paglen shows how computers and AI often display political favouritism and come to rely on biased stereotypes. Probably the best free exhibition in town – until it finishes on Sunday.

NERD OUT ON A COMEDY LEGEND: The Larry David Festival

The life’s work of comedian and actor Larry David – co-creator of Seinfeld and star of Curb Your Enthusiasm – comes under the microscope at Hackney’s Moth Club on Sunday, brought to you by film aficionados Deeper into Movies . The all-dayer also includes a screening of his rarely seen Sour Grapes film, as well as a quick-fire quiz and free pretzels, sadly without the company of Larry himself.

TRAIN IN 30ºC HEAT: Mindset

Pack your towel and prepare to sweat. At 10am on Saturday, in a 30ºC room, Sunset is a summer-inspired class that will put you through a tough set of challenges, including rounds of bodyweight, HIIT and yoga exercises. The idea is to push you to your limits and improve your overall fitness, making you physically and mentally stronger for future workouts – if you survive it, of course.
