What To Do This Weekend 21.02.20

/

Storm Dennis has blown itself out so now it’s time for you to get out and about. From record hunting in Old Spitalfields Market to rediscovering one of the city’s finest Indian restaurants, here are some of the best things to do in London this weekend.

GO CRATE DIGGING: Friday Vinyl Market

Vinyl is hands down the best medium for listening to music, harking back to the pre-MP3 golden age. Finding the rarest and most collectible vintage vinyl can be a lifelong endeavour but, with one of the country’s best vinyl markets on your doorstep, there’s no better time to start. Running every first and third Friday of the month at Old Spitalfields Market, the selection here spans retro 60s classics to 90s hip hop.

GET A FULL BODY WORKOUT: The Piston At F45

Cult Australian class-based gym brand F45 has unveiled a killer new class. The Piston is a full-body strength session involving resistance exercises between the upper and lower body, as well as some push and pull movements to really make you sweat. If you’ve ever been to a circuit class, it’s a bit like that. The workout follows a racetrack-style loop, with participants having to pass through 12 gruelling stations. A 30-second hydration break after each completed lap helps with recovery. Head down this weekend if you think you can handle the challenge.

EAT AT A NEW-LOOK OLD FAVOURITE: Gymkhana

Michelin-starred Indian restaurant Gymkhana reopened this week, nine months after a fire forced it to close. Adversity has been turned into opportunity: it’s had a makeover. A bold Kashmiri colour palette gives it a traditional yet sophisticated feel. Classic menu items are still in place – including the kebabs, chops and biryanis – but there are some appealing newbies such as a game bird baida roti. Downstairs, the bar is now inspired by an Edwardian drawing-room cabinet and has a redesigned cocktail menu. Order a dirty martini garnished with an olive brine poppadum.

HAVE A LAUGH: Greed

Steve Coogan stars in this farcical comedy as Sir Richard McCreadie, a disgraced British billionaire who made his fortune on the high street. (Sound familiar?) By way of a comeback, McCreadie plans a lavish birthday spectacle – with an obnoxious Roman theme – on the Greek island of Mykonos. The cast includes the hilarious Isla Fisher as McCreadie’s scorned ex-wife and David Mitchell as his self-deprecating personal biographer. Greed is a punchy satire from director Michael Winterbottom (24 Hour Party People) that targets the absurdity and corruption of the rich and famous – and it’s right on the money.

SEE ART FROM AN OSCAR WINNER: Steve McQueen

Steve McQueen, Turner Prize winner and director of 12 Years A Slave, is a modern-day polymath. Across film, photography and sculpture, he has created some of the most innovative and influential British art of the last 25 years. With grace and poignancy, he has shone a light on the darker side of life. Until May, 14 of his works are on display at the Tate Modern. Each represents a significant moment in his career, encapsulating the socio-political issues he has always sought to highlight.
