Get Date Night Right

Engel

Engel is a slice of 1920s Berlin in the middle of Bank. On the mezzanine of the Royal Exchange, this cocktail bar serves a menu of German and Austrian classics, caviar and oysters. Catering to the after-work crowd, it’s Wednesdays and Thursdays when the spot comes alive with jazz singers and burlesque dancers who weave between the tables. On the cocktail menu, you can play it safe with their classic picks, but the adventurous would opt for the savoury Trüffel-Martini.

Get Out Of Town

The Oarsman

Just an hour out of London, you’ll find leafy Marlow. It’s regularly selected as one of the UK’s most desirable spots to live, so we don’t blame chef Simon Bonwick for taking up residence at The Oarsman, a beloved bistro-pub in the town. As its resident ‘Troublesome Lodger’, he will host a regular and exclusive night at a communal table for 12 guests in the upstairs dining room. Each Thursday, Friday and Saturday (or at an additional 1pm lunch service on the last Thursday of every month), guests can sample a six-course menu from the chef. It will change regularly, but you can expect the likes of freshly cracked crab tacos and wagyu beef fillet, followed by a Michel Cluizel chocolate sablée with mango sorbet. The Oarsman’s resident wine expert will be on hand to supply the pairings – all for £85 a head.

Try A New Workout

Rocket Padel At Battersea Power Station

If you haven’t tried padel yet, you’re among an ever diminishing minority – it counts Ronaldo, Beckham and Murray among its converts. In short, it’s a tennis-squash hybrid: fun, easy to play and sociable. The latest place to play in London is Rocket Padel at Battersea Power Station. Housed in a futuristic 11-metre-high glass building, the club has four courts with Thames views. It’s also got a clubhouse, sleek changing facilities, a warm-up area, a bar and a bistro for post-match catchups.

The Twenty Two X Chef Masa Takayama

The Twenty Two crossed the Atlantic recently and took a bit of its Mayfair flair to New York, with a new hotel on Union Square. In exchange, NYC has lent it chef Masa Takayama – the man behind Manhattan’s three Michelin-starred Kappo Masa. For a short time only, his innovative approach to Japanese cuisine will be on display at The Twenty Two’s in-house restaurant. Expect dishes like roasted uni shell with truffles, maitake mushroom rolls and soy ribeye steaks – all paired with a selection of wine and sake.

The Lincoln Lawyer

The Lincoln Lawyer is back for a third season with Manuel Garcia-Rulfo reprising his role as take-no-prisoners Mickey Haller, LA’s most sought-after defence attorney. Across ten new episodes inspired by The Gods Of Guilt – the fifth book in Michael Connelly’s series – expect plenty of courtroom drama. After last season’s reveal that his buddy Glory Days – who helped him with season one’s Jesus Menendez case – is dead, Mickey is on the warpath. Brace yourself for more complicated romantic entanglements, quippy legal exchanges and gratuitous shots of Mickey driving around LA in his beloved Lincoln Continental convertible.

Go Out On A Sunday

Three Sheets Plat Du Jour

Three Sheets in Soho is launching Plat du Jour, a Sunday series that invites London chefs to create their dream bar snacks. Each guest chef will create a menu featuring dressed oysters, snack plates, their unique spin on a bun, dressed chips and a sweet finish. First up on Sunday 20th October is Anna Søgaard (ex-Bistro Freddie). She will showcase flavours from her native Denmark, with her own take on the classic ‘vet’s night snack’ – salt beef on caraway rye with chicken liver parfait and aspic – and a rød grød med fløde, a red berry porridge topped with whipped cream. The Venning brothers will handle drinks, serving cocktails, champagnes and special wines by the bottle throughout the evening. Tickets start from £45 for the five-course feast
