My first bit of advice is to simply treat someone to something they’d never buy for themselves – a hair perfume (brilliant but not quite a necessity), a special-occasion designer lipstick, or a seemingly frivolous scented candle. My second tip is to look for more niche, cool brands. This shows you’ve put a bit of thought into things. Commune makes the most gorgeous and Insta-worthy bathroom products in Somerset, while fragrance brand DedCool is an under-the-radar beauty-editor favourite. That said, you just can’t go wrong with the classics. Chanel, Tom Ford, Dior… no one’s going to be disappointed ripping off the wrapping paper to find those logos underneath.

Look at the fashion brands and aesthetics someone likes, and see if there are matching beauty options. Loewe, for example, does fragrances and candles that are as sleek and modern as its handbags. At the more affordable end, COS makes beautiful, minimalist scents you can pick up alongside a cashmere jumper (another no-brainer present). For make-up, I’ve not met anyone who doesn’t love Victoria Beckham’s line – the formulas and packaging are beautiful – and Merit is about as chic as a brand gets.

Consider which indulgences would bring a smile to their face. Is it a steaming bath sprinkled with salts and overflowing with bubbles? A skincare gadget they can use during some downtime? (An LED mask is a popular option this year.) Or it could be as simple as a delicious hand cream for them to keep in their handbag. Also pay attention to what might need upgrading. For example, is their hair dryer on its last legs? Are they scraping the remnants from the bottom of their favourite face cream or working with the final crumbs of their blush? Snoop around their dressing table – it might write your shopping list for you.
