“I’ve taken some form of elderberry and echinacea since I was a child; it was a ritual in my house growing up. My mum was a nurse, my dad a doctor, so even though this is slightly homoeopathic leaning, I know it’s fantastic for immunity. Today I’ve added in selenium, zinc and magnesium to regulate testosterone and help with both energy levels and sleep quality. With work, exercise and kids, sleep is so important and I’ve not always been the best at it. I also take uva ursi and aceophilus, which are both great for supporting natural stomach cultures. With the stress of running a business, your digestive tract needs to be in check – there’s a massive link between a healthy mind and the gut, so I keep both in check.”

“Let me be totally honest: most of these were recommended to me by my wife, but I’ve kept chugging along with them and now feel a real difference. I take a combined magnesium capsule (which has all four forms – glycinate, taurate, citrate and malate) twice a day. This stuff has to have magic somewhere because it turns me from night to day. There are times I’ve been back to back for days and feeling heavily fatigued and, taking these, it’s a complete turnaround within 24 hours, from improved sleep to a lighter mood. On top of that, lion’s mane and ashwagandha really help to sharpen my focus and give greater clarity of mind. It’s subtle, but it works. Finally, good old vitamin D is a great immunity booster for me and my entire family, and I find it helps with energy levels too. It’s a staple in our home.”

The INKEY List
“It’s important to remember that supplements aren’t magic beans or a replacement for bad food or a body that never moves, so I keep the list tight but consistent. Shilajit is the slightly prehistoric member of the list: a mineral-rich resin containing fulvic compounds and trace minerals. I take it in the morning because I find it supports my energy, focus and general sense of get-up-and-go. The evidence is still emerging rather than definitive, so I don’t treat it as a miracle. For cellular energy I have a go-to trio to support how well my cells function as I age. It consists of NMN (a precursor used by the body to product NAD+, a molecule involved in metabolism and repair), trans-resveratrol (which can support cellular stress-response pathways) and TMG (trimethylglycine, which helps support normal methylation, regulating hormones and detoxification). After a few years of taking these, I feel healthier than ever. Creatine is the most scientifically dependable supplement in my cupboard, helping not only to replenish during exercise but also, according to research, aiding healthy ageing and cognitive performance. Lastly I take omega-3 (a high-strength one) to support fats associated with cardiovascular, brain and inflammatory function.”

“As I spend my life in restaurants, I fast for 24 hours once a week – consuming one coffee in the morning then just water all day – to give my body a break and reset my metabolism. Sleep is the best medicine though, so I’ll take magnesium before bed to help relax my nervous system. During the day the only supplement I consistently take is omega-3 with Q10 to improve my heart function and keep my blood pressure at a healthy level. When I exercise, which is around four times a week, I’ll drink electrolytes, handed to me by my health-conscious wife.”

“I work out in the morning and make sure I have some electrolytes to hydrate so I’m ready for the day. Before I leave the house, I also take a marine collagen gel for skin health, biotin to support hair growth (and stop any more thinning), and a bio cultures complex capsule containing both probiotics and prebiotics to keep my gut healthy. At work I keep lion’s mane on my desk; I take it to help me focus and lock in when I need to really get something done. If it’s a particularly stressful day, I also have some ashwagandha gummies in my bag to help me chill out a bit. Before bed I take some magnesium glycinate to improve my sleep quality as well as help with muscle recovery for exercise the next morning.”
