Frankie’s Little Black Book Of Wellness

There’s another world in which SLMan contributor Frankie Foster is now a professional sportsman. Here, he gives us the lowdown on how he trains, what he eats, and where his relationship with wellness sits today.

I have a long history with fitness for someone who works out pretty casually now. From a young age I was competing: I had spells at Premier League football clubs as an early teen, played League 1 rugby in my early 20s and – like so many guys – believe I could have made it if it wasn’t for injury (in my case, a couple of ACL ruptures).

I started working in a gym at 15. This progressed from a reception job to taking classes, coaching one on one, and starting an online personal training platform. I was probably at my most athletic in my early 20s but can still hope of getting back to that point…

I love to work out outdoors. If the weather permits, I go for a run, work out in a calisthenics park gym or swim in Sea Lanes Canary Wharf. I’ve noticed I now enjoy working out with other people more, probably because I can be lazy on my own.

Boxing is my current obsession. There’s no better place in London for it than JAB. As someone who’s a little broken for contact sports these days, I can get a piece of that competition while still having fun. Otherwise, if I’m lifting weights, I usually just make use of my Shoreditch House membership.

I travel so much that I always plan my workouts ahead of time. If I’m a little tired and have to figure out how and where I will train, then I will probably talk myself out of it. But if I know the hotel has a gym, or a friend has recommended a nice run, or I have bought a pass for a local class, the only decision I have to make is when to get it done. Travel workouts don’t have to be full workouts – 30 minutes in a basic hotel gym will still have you feeling a lot better than nothing.

There is horse racing 365 days a year around the world – if you want to stay fit or get fit, there is no ‘right time’. My life in horse racing is incredibly social. There are a lot of events and a lot of food on the go. I tend to eat light earlier in the day to allow for more calories towards the evening when I have events.

I take vitamin D through winter, electrolytes when flying and protein shakes when I feel like I haven’t got enough from my diet. I keep it simple, and it seems to have worked for me so far.

In my early 20s I lived a gym bro life. My diet reflected that – great for a six pack but not that great for enjoying life and food. I am, however, quite thankful for those years because they instilled some good habits. I eat plenty of fruit and veg, and try to include a good protein portion in my lunch and dinner.

Breakfast is more for pleasure than anything else. That means a coffee and a croissant religiously. I’m a big pastry fan generally. And who wants to start the day with something miserable?

Lululemon has been my go-to brand for years. It gets it right in terms of fit and quality. An underappreciated brand for basic gymwear is Uniqlo. It’s affordable but the fabrics are technically really good. I’m not dedicated to a particular shoe brand, but I wear Nike Metcons in the gym for weightlifting.

I love an at-home massage. If I’ve just landed back from a trip, I’ll often book one with Urban.

My grooming regime is low maintenance but I’ve become more particular as I get older. I get my haircut at Murdock London. A visit there for a haircut and clean shave feels like a real treat.

I’m a light sleeper so I use Loop earplugs. They’re really effective, but that’s about as far as my fitness tech goes.

I’m terrible at meditation or even just relaxing. I have to do something that keeps me somewhat busy while I chill out. I love to draw as it makes my mind focus on something other than work, and keeps my hands off my phone. I love a sauna to really switch off too.
