How To Recreate This Stylish Living Space For Less
The Scheme
We wanted to create a formal yet inviting reception room that balanced period character with contemporary touches. The grand proportions, high ceilings, panelling and restored fireplace feel elegant, while contemporary furniture, lighting and artwork – alongside a few playful details and layered textures – add warmth and personality.
The Starting Point
The design started with the client’s brief for a grown-up living space – a room where they could unwind in the evenings once family life quietened down. It needed to be refined, luxurious, comfortable and different from their family living room.
The Colour Palette & Materials
We focused on rich, textural finishes in calming tones. The walls are painted a warm mid-brown (F&B 'London Stone'), paired with a hazel brown velvet sofa that complements the client’s own artwork, pale green mohair cord armchairs and a marble-topped coffee table.
The Period Details & Modern Touches
It’s all about achieving the right balance. The mix of furniture – from the velvet upholstered sofa and custom marble topped coffee table to the antique desk and vintage chairs – hits that sweet spot between old and new. The result is a sophisticated but lived in space. Respecting the original features while introducing contemporary pieces ensures the room feels cohesive and timeless.
