10 Minutes With… Lando Norris

Lando Norris is having one hell of an F1 season. We flagged him down to find out what makes him tick off the track. From death-row carbonara to late-night padel, here’s what he gave us – plus, you can find Lando’s helmet in an Uber Exec somewhere in London between 3rd and 7th October…

You’re a man of the world, Lando. What’s your favourite cuisine?

That’s a tough one. We travel a lot, and I’ve had some amazing food in Japan, but Italian is generally my favourite. It’s very hard to beat a good pasta or pizza – if I could have a last meal, I’d take a good carbonara or meatballs. My boss, Andrea, is Italian, and he knows true Italian. When we go to Italy, he always knows the best spots.

Do you drink coffee? What’s your order?

I don’t drink coffee. I don’t like the taste of it, and I don’t really need anything to give me a kick in the morning. I just have a nice breakfast, and I’m happy with that. Sometimes a cold shower and I’m good to go.

Will Ferrell films like Step Brothers or Talladega Nights always lift my mood.

You live in Monaco. What do you like about it there?

It’s easy to get around. You can go to Nice, Cannes, Saint-Tropez, even Italy is close. In winter, you’re not far from great skiing places. There are nice places for golfing, and lots of athletes live here – whether it’s racing drivers, tennis players or cyclists – so we sometimes just play padel together. There’s a good bunch of people here, and the weather’s good, so it’s easy to stay active.

What’s your favourite part of London?

I really love London in the winter, when all the Christmas lights are up. I usually stay near Harrods, as I have a lot of friends near there. There are also great shops and restaurants, and that’s all I need. The Twenty-Two is also a go-to.

Is this where you lost your helmet in an Uber Exec?

I don't remember!

@AimeLeonDore

Where do you go to recharge and recover?

Normally, the golf course. That can be alone or with friends. Sometimes I put my earbuds in and listen to some music, but it’s also nice to do something with a group. As competitive and as stressful as it is – because I’m a competitive guy – golf is the most enjoyable, relaxing sport, and something that completely takes my mind off racing. I enjoy it so much, I want to be good at it, which means I have a lot of focus, and that really distracts me from racing.

Caught any good TV series or films recently?

Not much time for TV lately, but I’m keen to watch the latest Dexter season. It’s been one of my favourite series for the past few years. For films, I’m drawn to comedy and action, especially older war movies – a real story moves me. Will Ferrell films like Step Brothers or Talladega Nights always lift my mood.

Favourite clothing brands right now?

I’m wearing a Mariah Carey tank top right now, but things you can never go wrong with are brands like Aimé Leon Dore or anything with a Ronnie Fieg touch, like Kith. Clothes are expensive, so sometimes I’ll have a little spree, then sometimes I go months without buying anything. But ALD and Kith are my usual picks when I’m in the mood.

How would you describe your off-duty style?

Sometimes clueless! And usually relaxed. I prefer to travel in comfort rather than look too cool, so I normally wear joggers and hoodies. So, clueless and relaxed.

Any favourite watches in your collection?

We’re with Richard Mille as a team and also personally. They’re the coolest by a mile and the hardest to get. Even as a kid, when I’d see the posters on the wall, I’d be like, ‘What the hell is that?’ It looks so different and so cool. My cars are carbon – all F1 cars are carbon – and a lot of the watches that RM do are carbon. I love them a lot, and I have a few in my collection: a chronograph, two McLaren editions, and a pink and white Mutaz Barshim High Jumper 6702. It's the thinnest one they do, and it goes with anything. I can do sports in it as it’s insanely light – maybe 30g. You forget you have it on sometimes. It's never an issue, and it always stands out.

Where do you get your haircut?

By my best mate’s younger brother, Theo. He does it in the garden at his house. Or he travels down to McLaren.

Have you got a signature fragrance?

Polo Red by Ralph Lauren is the one I use most. I keep it in every bag because I often forget things. I’ll be wearing it before I go on the grid, and afterwards on the podium, covered in champagne. I have a few different Polo ones, but Polo Red is the one. It’s sporty, not just for a night out.

Best hotel you’ve stayed at?

When I’m racing, I stay at lots of Hiltons, including the Conrad Singapore. The people tend to make the biggest difference in hotels, and the Conrad Singapore has some of the most lovely and accommodating people. Because I’m in a different time zone, I’ll have breakfast at 1 pm, or lunch at 7pm, and the chefs adjust for F1 schedules. It’s the hotel I look forward to the most.

@Lando
Winning at Silverstone, in front of family and British fans, is the ultimate highlight – easily the best feeling in my career to date.

Any tips for travelling well?

Discipline with sleep is essential. Not napping when you want to is hard, but it’s key to adjusting to time zones. Seeing sunlight at the right times helps more than coffee. When shifting schedule, I go out and do something – golf or padel helps me adapt quickly. Sometimes I’ll go out and play padel until 1am just to adjust. It’s better to get out of the room.

Is the F1 grid obsessed with padel?

It’s not just the grid – it’s everyone now. Padel is accessible in most cities globally and makes socialising with teammates easy. If I could play golf everywhere, I would, but padel fits in for a short burst of activity.

Go-to kit or racquet for padel?

No favourites – I’m that good, I can play with anything.

Finally, Lando, what’s the proudest moment of your career so far?

Getting into F1 was huge for me and my family. Doing my first race in Australia was pretty sick. Then, it’s stepping on the podium for the first time. Then, winning at Silverstone, in front of family and British fans, is the ultimate highlight – easily the best feeling in my career to date. But I would still say my first race. Not many people get to F1, so that's a pretty cool achievement in itself.

Between 3rd and 7th October, one lucky rider will find a racing helmet signed by Lando in an Uber Exec in London. Book your Uber here.
