10 Style Rules To Live By

If there's anyone who knows a thing or two about great male style, it’s Sarah Greig, Head of Menswear Design at Jaeger. From the pieces worth investing in to accessories advice, here she talks us through the ten style rules she thinks all men should follow.

Buy Classic

You cannot underestimate the need to prioritise classic pieces in core colours that won’t go out of style. Now more than ever it's important to buy versatile, sustainable pieces that will look good for a long time. Plus, classic pieces are generally easier to style because they’re tried and tested.

Invest In Quality Staples

If something is well made, it will feel as good as it looks – and comfort is so important when you’re buying clothes to represent you. Natural, noble fabrics that work with you and your silhouette are essential. When buying a suit, always make sure it fits well across your shoulders – you can always have the waist and chest tailored.

Own A Transformative Coat

Every wardrobe needs a failsafe coat that has the power to transform a look each time. A camel coat is a true icon that will pull any outfit together and add old-school cool to any situation, whether you’re walking into a big meeting or out for drinks.

INVEST IN An Impeccable Suit

Parties and special events have a habit of popping up last minute, so don’t wait until that last minute to buy a great suit. Take your time, try a few different styles and get a feel for what you like.

TAKE CARE WITH Accessories

The smallest details are so often the ones that set you a part from the crowd. This is especially true for pocket squares, ties, socks and cufflinks especially when wearing tailoring.

Don’t Overlook Loungewear

It may seem excessive to spend money on loungewear, but you won't regret paying a little more for quality. Regular travel or weekends in are best done in soft cashmere whether you're male or female.

Never SCRIMP On Shoes

So often a man’s shoes are the first thing a woman will look at! Whether it’s box-fresh trainers or a pair of brogues, it’s not a part of your wardrobe to neglect. Choose a classic brand like Church’s, which you can have resoled, or Grenson for a great boot or a smarter casual shoe.  Don’t forget to invest in good shoe polish; dirty shoes will ruin any outfit.

Don’t Be Afraid To Mix High With Low

Finding your own personal style can take time, but the best way to work out your signature is to try everything. Don’t reserve your smartest jackets for evening; dress them down with dark denim or chinos. The same applies to tailoring: mix it up with knitwear and jerseys to make tailored pieces an everyday option.

Buy A Forever Watch

Watches are an essential part of your wardrobe and one everyone will see. Style and substance are essential: you want something that will never let you down but refined enough to pass down one day. Go for Omega for no-fuss functionality or invest in an IWC.

Perfect Your Grooming Routine

A grooming routine is essential to looking and feeling as good as you can – beards are in so give one a go. Most stylists offer a grooming service, but you can’t beat a wet shave in a Turkish barber.
