1 Tailor, 3 Stylish Watches

Dav Sehra is never without a watch. He’s also the founder and tailor at Acre & Row – and an ideal candidate to style three Seiko Presage timepieces for SLMan. While he put his looks together, he chatted to us about sartorial heroes, favourite shops and the best things to spend real money on.

Created in partnership with SEIKO

Tell us a bit about your personal style, Dav…

I would say it is very classic. I lean towards a very capsule-oriented wardrobe. If I’m at work, it’s a suit. Otherwise, I wear trousers, generally in navy blue, and then either an Oxford shirt, knitted jumper or knitted polo shirt. As a father of a three-year-old, I'm less trend focused. I’ve realised how important being comfortable in my clothing is when I'm running around. I stick to a classic colour palette in a very comfortable cut.

If you could have anyone's wardrobe, whose would it be?

Oh, tough question. I'll probably have a few comments on this one, but Hugh Grant. He's always dressed well. It's always that slightly oversized Oxford shirt, chinos or trousers, and a jumper thrown over the shoulders. He stands out as one of the few actors whom I've never seen dress badly.

Talk us through the three looks you’ve styled for this shoot…

The Seiko Presage with the sunburst ice blue dial is perfect with a sky-blue blouson, white trousers and navy polo. I've got quite slender wrists, so the smaller dial worked incredibly well, and was super comfortable to wear.

I styled the exposed Presage with cream linen trousers, sage green blazer, and a shirt and tie. It’s a sophisticated formal look that ensures the watch is not too in your face, yet still noticeable enough to hold its own.

The final look features a linen teba jacket (a Spanish take on the blazer), navy trousers and a linen shirt. This was the perfect combination for the smaller Seiko Presage in yellow gold. I always find a little bit of yellow gold accentuates everything nicely and here, it works beautifully with the off-white jacket.

What role do watches play in your life?

You'll never see me without a watch on. One of my watches is my grandfather's Seiko from the 1950s. It came on a bracelet but I put a Nato strap on it.

What’s your favourite item of clothing?

Trousers. Generally, mine are high-waisted double pleat or single pleat with a slightly fuller leg. And that is my go-to, whether it's the weekend, going to Soho Farmhouse with the family, or something else. If it's not too hot, then I'm in trousers. They work with any shoe and for any occasion. You can rock up to the pub with high-waisted pleated trousers or you can go to a very formal event in them.

How do you shop?

When I do, I'll have a look online but make a point of going into bricks and mortar to buy. Then you get to try it on, you get a feel for it and you interact with other people.

What are you investing in?

I like to buy a nice watch now and then. I prefer to spend money on something that's really good quality, rather than spending a little and then having to constantly replace it. I really try and look after stuff – I’ll always make sure to get my watches serviced. My dad's always told me from a very young age to never skimp on shoes, so I've always spent a lot of money on good shoes. My favourites are a pair of Crockett and Jones which I bought nine years ago, which I've had resoled and polished.

How do trends fit into your style?

There's always going to be an element of trends filtering in and out but finding your style and being confident in yourself is something that becomes more apparent as your mature. You almost want to think less about what you're wearing. Trends are not as involved in my wardrobe as they used to be, but I still keep an eye on them because customers like to be on trend. It just so happens that the last couple of years the trend has been towards tailoring, minimalism and classic pieces. That’s what I do on a daily basis anyway, so I'm hand in hand with the trend at the moment.

Where’s been your best city for shopping throughout the years?

It’s got to be London. In the UK, we're good at dressing well but also being true to fashion overall, whether it's streetwear or formal wear. London is still the home of menswear, although I am finding myself looking at the Korean guys too. They dress really well.

How do accessories fit into your styling?

A good timepiece, such as the Seiko Presage watches worn in the shoot, always elevate an outfit. I've always had my signet ring and my wedding ring. But I got my eyes properly tested recently and now I always carry a pair of sunglasses with me, which I've been told I should wear even in the winter. I like a baseball cap with tailoring when my hair is not in the best shape or needs a good trim.
