Persol

This is one of the oldest eyewear makers in the world. Buy a pair of Persols and you are buying into the brand that was once preferred by Ayrton Senna. Its recognisable hinge designs feel ornate and distinctly Italian, making this an ideal vacation brand. Persols pair perfectly with a cooling aperitivo and a ciao bella approach to life.

Jimmy Fairly

This 2010-founded French brand has become one of the best places to shop sunglasses at just above the £100 mark. It’s not just the versatility and diversity of its stock that’s impressive – it’s the desirability too.

Jacques Marie Mage

When Frenchman Jérôme Mage started this brand in LA a decade ago, it filled the void for a design-led eyewear brand that put craft and small-batch production to the fore. Its frames tend to be bold, with intricate metal work carried out in its studio in Japan – thanks to that intricacy, some designs take 18 months to produce. Notable fans include Brad Pitt, Jeff Goldblum and Daniel Craig. Not a bad rank to join.

Ace & Tate

Amsterdam-based Ace & Tate takes a no-nonsense approach to eyewear. Made from bio-acetate and recycled acetate, its frames are offered in an array of lens sizes and tones, including a sharp blue lens that feels refreshingly unique. Your wallet is safe here and, despite the wide range, there are no stylistic wrong turns either.

Cutler And Gross

Explosive recent collaborations with skate label Palace and Soho jewellery maker The Great Frog have returned Cutler and Gross to the conversation. Insiders, of course, have known it’s been a sunglasses brand to make a statement with since it was founded back in 1969.

Finlay

This British brand does important things well. Its Italian Mazzucchelli bio-acetate makes production less damaging, and its Zeiss lenses deliver crystal clarity as well as broad-spectrum UV protection. Models come in between £100 and £150, meaning you can indulge in unique British design at a fair price. The brand recently teamed up with Noel Gallagher to create a Britpop-inspired range that donates 25% of proceeds (Noel’s portion) to Teenage Cancer Trust.
