5 Cool Shirt Trends To Try This Summer
BOWLING SHIRTS
More restrained than the Hawaiians we’ve been seeing in recent years, bowling shirts gain their character from simpler motifs, embroidery and subtle letter details. They’re more wearable as a result, eliminating the danger of looking like your dad at a family BBQ. Pair one with a smart suit or linen trouser for the city then swap in some swim shorts to hit the beach.
BANDANA PRINTS
The likes of Kapital, Rhude and Desmond & Dempsey embraced bandana prints and made them an option we rate – and then there was Bryan Cranston’s turn in Kith’s SS23 campaign. The palette for bandana prints leans toward navy, black, white and cream – making these pieces easy to pair with staples like chinos, denim or a white tee.
CO-ORDS
Short-sleeve co-ords are well established as the no-effort-needed way to look put together. There are PJ-inspired silk sets for braver sorts to explore, but also some less overt options – like a linen shirt and trouser, or this COS combo in an interesting blue shade. To give a printed set a laid-back feel, wear the shirt open with a white tee underneath, then add a cap and Birkenstock Arizonas.
FLORALS
Menswear florals are now more sophisticated than you might imagine. Smaller, subtle prints are the quiet way into the trend, but will still add colour and pattern to even the simplest of looks. If you’re looking to be a tad more adventurous, consider a stronger print or bolder colours. Either way, florals are always best with straightforward basics – picture a shirt layered over a white tee with chinos.
KNITTED POLOS
Perhaps a knitted polo shirt could be your new-season hero. Less preppy than classic polos, they’re cooler too – think The Talented Mr Ripley’s Dickie meets Mad Men’s Don Draper. Best of all, they hit the sartorial sweet spot between smart and casual, so you can wear them with loose shorts and sliders by day, then tailored trousers and loafers for a night out. Look out for contrasting collars, retro colours and sporty stripes.
