How To Wear Khaki Today

Khaki can be so great and timeless. Just picture Steve McQueen as the world’s best dressed POW in The Great Escape. But, as we emerge from the era of the skinny-fit chinos, we also know it’s easy to get this classic military neutral wrong. That’s why it’s time to share our rules for getting it right, three khaki looks we like, and some wider Insta-fuelled inspo to keep you on track…

First Thing's First, These Are The Rules For Getting It Right...

01

Pair It Wisely

Think of khaki today as an alternative, more interesting neutral. That means using it in the place of beige, white or black. The colour has an earthy tone, so it pairs well with navy, green, camel and beige. Perhaps the most failsafe combo to style it with is navy and grey. Pairing it with a highly pigmented red, orange or bright yellow can look quite jarring – though adding a pop of colour via small accessories like a cap can add a modern edge to looks.

02

Keep It Cool

This isn’t an unbreakable rule – because everything depends on what you’re pairing your khaki with – but cooler-toned khaki feels more current right now. Follow the lead of influencers like @Jakki_Me and brands like APC.

03

Bigger Is Better

Shackets and chinos are the most likely starting points for introducing khaki into your wardrobe. To avoid any questionable missionary-in-safari-jacket vibes, go oversized. Either size up your jacket and keep the bottoms true to size or vice versa – don’t supersize both together.

04

Try Tailoring

A khaki blazer can take evening and event looks to a more stylish place. This season, linen is a smart choice for a lighter look and feel – look to brands like Percival, Gant and Mr P. for options.

04

Don’t Forget The Accessories

Accessories are the subtle way to wear khaki. From caps to bags and trainers to sandals, there are plenty of options. Stay classic with a khaki tote bag or belt. For a cooler look, go for khaki Birkenstocks.

This Is How Instagram's Most Stylish Men Are Nailing It...

@Mat_Buckets has gone for a shacket layered over a navy sweatshirt and some relaxed-fit trousers. A cool cap completes the off-duty look.

@RawAndDapper styles a sleeker silhouette with slim-fit chinos, smart shoes and a striped shirt. A bright green cap both contrasts and freshens up the darker khaki.

If you’re willing to push the boat out, pale yellows look seriously cool with khaki. @AimeLeonDore nailed the combo with its SS23 campaign: pull-on khaki linen trousers with a simple white tank and a pale yellow short-sleeve shirt. Add fisherman sandals and a bucket hat if you’re brave enough – and thank ALD later.
