Sunspel’s Creative Director Shares His Wardrobe Essentials

/

Basics specialist Sunspel is a great British brand. Which must make its creative director David Telfer a great British man. That’s why we went to him for some wardrobe inspiration – from all-time hero pieces to a cool new sports watch…

THE FOOTWEAR

I typically wear smarter footwear over trainers day to day, when I’m in the city for work. I love Paraboot’s Michael style because it can feel dressed up or casual depending on the rest of your look. We’ve actually got a collaboration coming out with the brand later this year – an unstructured soft version of the classic workwear shoe. Maybe it’ll replace my current go-to.

THE CLASSIC TEE

Ever since I’ve worked at Sunspel I haven't been able to wear a t-shirt from anyone else. Luckily, our quality, fit and feel are perfect for me – I like an easier relaxed fit in our heavier-weight carbon brushed jersey. It has a wider neck trim that works well on its own or layered under jackets and blazers. Fabric quality is the key to a great tee – wherever you go, opt for long-staple cotton so it's soft and fine yet durable and long-lasting.

THE CASUAL TROUSERS

I look for an easier tapered silhouette, which makes a pleat chino perfect for me. I like most of my trousers to have a single pleat as I find it more flattering, plus the leg doesn’t feel as restricted – while also not being overly baggy. These are a pair I can throw on with anything, and they will wash well and last.

THE RUNNING SHOE

I do a lot of running – especially in the summer – and try to get out on the trails local to me. Hoka’s shoes are the perfect balance of function, comfort and look, so they can be worn day to day when on a walk with the kids. They are also perfect for my new hobby: Speed Golf.

THE SMART TROUSERS

I’ve been meaning to get a custom pair of trousers made by Scott Fraser Collection. I love the fits – easy cuts with a double pleat – as well as the subtle heritage detailing that makes them feel unique. In a fine tailoring wool, the style is a versatile balance of smart and casual. They’re made in London too, making them that bit more special.

THE SHACKET

I wear a lot of shirt jackets throughout the year – from cord and wool in winter to linen and cotton blends in summer. This brushed-cotton twin-pocket jacket is a rare one that will look after you year round. I love styling mine with matching trousers – like a modern suit.

THE SUNNIES

Cutler and Gross is a great British sunglasses company that makes contemporary shapes of the highest quality. I love how heavy and stable its sunnies feel, like they’ll last a long time. This summer I have been wearing a rounder silhouette in a cloudy transparent colour they call Humble Potato. They’ve got a timeless shape and colour but still feel unique.

THE TRANSITIONAL KNIT

Knitted jackets are a valuable transitional piece to have in your wardrobe. They can be dressed up for a smarter look, while remaining very comfortable. This one has cotton on the inside and lambswool on the outside, meaning it feels cool against the skin but will keep you warm when it starts to get cooler.

THE BAG

I use backpacks for both commuting and family day trips – so I need one that’s big enough and easy enough to pack down. I’ve loved using this one from Snow Peak. It’s refined and sleek looking but has a worked design that makes it incredibly functional.

THE SUIT

I would love to treat myself to a suit from Casely-Hayford. Charlie combines heritage fabrics with a unique take on tailoring. His understanding of soft construction and contemporary detailing gives this suit a special visual feel – making it a piece I’d wear for any occasion.

THE TECH ACCESSORY

For longer-distance running I needed a new sports watch. Buying a Sunnto was a no-brainer – it’s so nice having a functional model that doesn’t necessarily look like one. Contemporary looking and with all the right functionality, it does everything I need it to do without compromising the look.

THE COOL TEE

This summer I’ve enjoyed wearing a fine-knit T-shirt on its own and beneath overshirts. The textured knit and rib trims give an elevated look which feels a little more dressed up than a classic tee – without compromising on comfort. It pairs nicely with a range of outerwear too.

THE SPORTSWEAR

I have started buying most of my sportswear from Satisfy Running. I love the community it’s building and rate the product. Functionality is always good and nothing looks too sporty. Every product I’ve bought has lasted well – I respect how they are innovating so tastefully in this field.

THE CAP

I have never been one for caps but have really got into golf this year – so this one by Golf Wang is perfect. Depop is a good place to go if you can't get your hands on this exact one.
