The Birth Of An Icon

The polo shirt was developed in the late 19th century in an attempt to create sportswear that was less stiff and more breathable than a regular shirt. By the early 20th century it had been adopted by the tennis world and in 1972, Ralph Lauren borrowed the iconographer of the polo player to reposition it towards fashion. The styling seen on Ralph Lauren’s runways through the 1980s and 1990s continued to bridge the gap between sportswear and style-icon status. In 2005, the US Open marked the introduction of the Big Pony Polo, linking the garment back to sportswear with more authenticity than ever before. 

The Enduring Design

Officially launched in the 70s in 24 colours, the Ralph Lauren polo was always conceived as something more than just the cotton fabric it was cut from. It represented freedom, a way of life and something inherently American. The comb-like texture gave it a chalky, grippy characteristic; the placket was hand-sewn on and the collar was thick, so it could be worn up, down or however suited you best. That explains why it’s stood the test of time – it’s all in the details.
