November’s Hot List

The SLMan Hot List gives you all the inspiration, recommendations and ideas you need this month. From a French brand specialising in perfect white shirts to Stanley Tucci’s new film, here are the coolest things to check out in November…

AUDIOBOOK: David Sedaris, The Best Of Me

Everyone’s favourite sarcastic author and commentator David Sedaris has collated some of his best stories and essays for The Best Of Me, which is out now in all formats. Tales cover shopping for rare taxidermy, hitchhiking with a quadriplegic, hand-feeding a carnivorous bird and much more – all told with his signature wit and charm. Read by the man himself, we recommend the audiobook for easy, hilarious listening.

BOOK: The Motorcycle: Design, Art, Desire

Phaidon, publisher of some of the world’s most luxe coffee-table tomes, has a new release. The Motorcycle: Design, Art, Desire documents the history, engineering and design behind the bike. Inside its striking cover, there’s a wealth of info, including commentary on new technologies and the motorbike’s social impact, all accompanied by some stunning imagery.

BRAND: Bourrienne Paris X

Bourrienne Paris X launched in 2017 with the sole purpose of creating that most elusive of wardrobe staples – the perfect white shirt. To date, the brand hasn’t strayed far from its original, eight-piece capsule collection, which runs from mandarin collars to exaggerated bibs crafted in crisp Normandy linen and Egyptian cotton. New to MATCHESFASHION, these are classic pieces that won’t break the bank.

FILM: Supernova

Big-screen veterans Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth join forces to play couple Tusker and Sam, who take a camper van trip in the wake of Tusker’s dementia diagnosis. Described as “sincere and affecting” by the Guardian and as a film that will “gently smash your heart to smithereens” by Variety, this understated piece is already getting rave reviews. Out 20th November.

FRAGRANCE: Creed Aventus 10 Year Anniversary Limited Edition

It’s the 10th birthday of the iconic Aventus fragrance this month and Creed is celebrating with a limited-edition bottle. Existing fans of the cult scent will appreciate the impactful new take on the classic, which should also catch the eye of anyone who is yet to be converted.

GROOMING: Harry’s X Tom Dixon

Shaving just got a whole lot cooler thanks to Tom Dixon. The design master has joined forces with affordable razor brand Harry’s for a stylish new take on the grooming classic – two smart, design-lead handles in black and aluminium will easily enhance that morning routine.

RESTAURANT: Café Bao Kings Cross

Hip restaurant group Bao opens in foodie hub King’s Cross this month. Café Bao is an all-day bakery, offering established brand favourites like Hamburger Bao, Lobster Bao and Fried Chicken XO Butter Kiev, as well as Pizza Bao stuffed with meat sauce and cheese. Sweeter treats include Molten Chocolate & Salted Egg ‘Muffin’ Bao and the Salted Caramel Bao Cookie. Inspired by Yoshoku cuisine, this new opening is something a little different to add to the must-try list.

SERIES: Small Axe

Hollywood director Steve McQueen turns to the small screen for the first time with this hotly anticipated series. An anthology of five short films, Small Axe reflects on the experiences of black communities through recent British history, with a stellar lineup including Black Panther’s Laetitia Wright and Star Wars’s John Boyega. The first three films previewed at the New York Film Festival last month to critical acclaim – set a reminder for 15th November.

TECH: Beats Flex

Beats Flex is a clever solution to the age-old exercising-in-headphones problem. A long lead connecting the two means you can sling them round your neck, while a 12-hour battery life means all-day use. Plus, unlike many of their noise-cancelling contemporaries, they won’t break the bank, at a mere £49.99.

WINE: Amie

Instagram’s favourite wine label is branching out from its rosé roots with the launch of both red and white bottles. The White is a crisp, aromatic Sauvignon Blanc with a touch of Gros Manseng. The red is a Carignan; from vines that are over 30 years old, it is well-rounded and elegant with blackberry fruit flavours. With the best-looking bottles in the biz, these are prime gifts for the season.
