How & Where To Get Into Trail Running

Trail running is road running’s wilder sibling. It can take your breath away in twice as many ways – as an endurance challenge, but also with the spectacular landscapes it can put you in. As it enjoys a surge in popularity, we caught up with a couple of experts for an easy intro – and rounded up the best brands and gear to help you swap the plodding predictability of the pavement for the adventure of the trail.

What Trail Running Really Is

Trail running is simply running on unpaved terrain – but don’t let the simplicity fool you. According to Ed Scott, marketing manager at Threshold Sports, the world of trail running is surprisingly diverse. “There’s a lot of variation – from gentle, groomed riverside towpaths to rugged, technical mountain trails. That’s part of what makes the sport so interesting – different runners will enjoy and excel over different kinds of terrain.”

As long as you’re stepping off the tarmac and onto dirt, grass, gravel or rock, you’re trail running. And while it shares similarities with road running, trail running is often more scenic and, depending on the route, more challenging.

Why It’s Booming

“Undoubtedly there has been a boom in trail running interest over the past decade or so,” Ed confirms. “Much of it comes down to technology. Runners can now use apps and GPS watches to map out routes, track performance, and even livestream some of the most hardcore ultramarathons from across the globe.” But the appeal goes deeper. “People want to connect more with the natural world around them,” suggests Ed. “Trail running is generally a more mindful activity than running on the roads.”

James McKay, founder of Sports Millions, agrees: “Trail running is the perfect antidote to our online lives. It reconnects us with nature, challenges our bodies, and gives us a mental reset.” And in 2025, it’s not just elite athletes lacing up trail shoes. “We’ve seen trail running become more inclusive and accessible,” he says. “Podcasts, social media and niche communities have demystified the sport, showing you don’t need to be an ultrarunner to start.”

How To Get Into It

If you’re new to the sport, the advice is unanimous: start local. “Most UK towns and cities have plenty of trails hidden within and around them,” Ed says. “There’s a joy in discovering these close to home and getting to know the landscape where you live.”

Ignore the high-altitude Instagram shots for now – you don’t need to be in the Scottish Highlands to begin. Instead, focus on building confidence on familiar paths. Use mapping apps like KomootAllTrailsOS Maps or Strava to explore trails in your area, and consider joining a local running club or community.

As for your first run, keep it short and simple, says Ed. “Trail running uses different muscles, especially when you’re navigating hills and uneven surfaces, so pacing yourself is key. Don’t be disheartened if you’re slower than your usual road times – that’s entirely normal, and even the pros walk the uphills.”

What You’ll Need (And What You Don’t)

There’s a lot of gear out there, but our experts agree: don’t let that stop you getting started. “Unless you’re heading off to the mountains or running in the depths of winter, most UK trails are runnable in road shoes,” Ed advises. “If you enjoy yourself, then a pair of versatile trail shoes is a really worthwhile investment.”

James recommends beginner-friendly trail shoes from brands like Hoka and Salomon, which are designed for comfort and grip on varied terrain. And when you’re ready to level up, look to a brand like Pressio, says Ed. “I also rate  whose watches offer brilliant navigation and battery life – important features for serious exploration.”

Where To Run Near London

London is a solid starting point for trail runners. “Believe it or not, London is 50% green space,” Ed points out. James confirms: “There are tons of trail networks to discover, particularly in the outer parts of the city – try Epping Forest, Wimbledon Common and Box Hill for their mix of terrain and scenery.”

Other spots to know include the Thames Path west of Putney for riverside runs and the Capital Ring for something more ambitious. It’s a 78-mile loop through parks, woodland and suburban streets. When you’re feeling confident, The London LOOP stretches 150 miles around Greater London, split into sections by TfL for easy access.

Why It’s More Than Just Running…

“In 2025, its popularity is surging,” says James. “People are looking for more than just mileage; they want adventure.” And while the physical benefits are obvious – better agility, stronger legs, improved endurance – it’s the mental health side that keeps most trail runners coming back. As Ed puts it: “Trail running is generally a more mindful activity. You’re moving slower, taking in your surroundings, and finding rhythm in the terrain.”
